MOD EDIT: Arbitrarily chosen as the one thread that survived the big cleaning of duplicates referring to kde emerge errors, stopped kdelibs compiles and the autoconfusion Caleb is hard at work to get out of the way. If in doubt, refer to the bug report! --plate

the thread really has nothing to do with kde othe than the fact that kde was the package that i was emerging when my system shut down due to a power failure

when i booted it back up and tried to emerge again, the install stopped due to an error when trying to make kdelibs
so i deleted the kde-relevent files from /var/tmp/portage
and i deleted /usr/portage/kde-base and ran emerge sync
it still stops at that error when i emerge

i am new to gentoo and unfamiliar with the portage process

how can i emerge kde now?

Not sure if this will work but try this:

Code:
emerge unmerge kde

then try to emerge again. If that don't work maybe some guru will come along and have a solution.

Later

:D :D :D :D

Oh, you may want to get a UPS?????

There shouldn't be a problem stopping mid-compile and then starting again later, quite often I ctl-c a compile of some large package because I want to play et, then I just issue the emerge again, and it picks up where it left off.

when i try to unmerge kde:
(the same happens with -c and what not)
Code:

!!! Couldn't find match for kde

>>> unmerge: No packages selected for removal.

and when i emerge kde, it goes throught the kdelib compile process, and crashes on make:

Code:

!!! ERROR: kde-base/kdelibs-3.1.4 failed.
!!! Function kde_src_compile, Line 123, Exitcode 2
!!! died running emake, kde_src_compile:make

one more question:
is it safe to emerge kde/gnome/other environment or wm when x is running?

oh, and i do have a battery backup
unfortuanately, i found out yesterday that it doesnt work

You may want to try emerge -f kde. That will just fetch the files and store them. Then kill x and try it without it running. It may help.

I did that when I upgraded mine because I was getting error messages. It may be that something is in use or a file is locked or something.

Really strange though.

I had the same problem, you must upgrade autoconf and re-emerge kde without java flag support

Try this
Code:

# cd /usr/portage/distfiles/rm kdelib*.*
# emerge /usr/portage/sys-devel/autoconf/autoconf-2.58.ebuild
# emerge kdelibs

to compile kde you must use -java

Code:

# USE="-java" emerge kde

Why do you have to use the -java thing? I know that it compiles it without java support, which I hope is added later, but why does it cause the error?

I'm confused, nothing new there though.

I´m new to Gentoo and had the same problem. (kdelibs Line 123). I started from a fresh install yesterday and got stuck in the emerge kde.

I upgraded to autoconf 2.58 and it seems to be fixed (I am compiling kdelibs right now without a glitch).

Thanks!

Likewise, 2.58 and kdelibs seems quite happy so far... ;)

PostPosted: Wed Jan 07, 2004 6:25 am    Post subject: Kernel 2.6 & KDE Reply with quote

OK,
I have tried all the hints here on the forum and have not gotten far.
I got kdelib installed but kdebase fails at freefont stuff. I also see when it starts compiling i get a warning in *s telling me adout a compile error (but it keeps going).

I have emerged autoconf 2.58 and now Im going to re-emerge X and freetype & then KDE.

ps. the KDE emerge failed even with autoconf & the (from no known source) -java & -sandbox adwise was used.

PLEASE HELP
System:
Kernel 2.6 development-sources
emeged ->system, lynx, xfree, kde, then autoconf 2.58 then umerged xfree & freetype (which is compiling now w/ new autoconf)

Also I noticed so permittion setting stoping the /root/.kde files from being written ?
!even though this is an untouched system in the cense its only been emerged w/ no chmoding!

I will post my findings Wednesday afternoon EST.

There's a bug report open for this error
Code:

!!! ERROR: kde-base/kdelibs-3.1.4 failed.
!!! Function kde_src_compile, Line 123, Exitcode 2
!!! died running emake, kde_src_compile:make

You can find report Here

Try to post error line

Why have you re-emerged X?

I've added a check to the kdelibs-3.1.4 ebuild that will cause it to die if you have autoconf-2.57-r1 installed. I think this should stop the repeated bug reports/questions on the forums/bugs.g.o until higher versions become stable.

I used this method as well, and it worked for me.

as an update to the situation:

im running gentoo on two similar boxes with the same architecture (athlon xp) and similar components
i formated and installed gentoo on both machines within a day or two of eachother
the first thing i did after booting on both machines was install xfree86 (great docs btw), and i followed that up with a gnome install
then i attempted to install kde
one computer a, i was unable to initially install kde, so i started this thread
i did what was instructed by yoshi:

Code:
Code:

# USE="-java" emerge kde

and it worked....on computer a at least

i also got errors when installing kde on computer b,
howerver none of the methods in the threads here helped it at all

as of now (1/8 in case i edit), it still does not work, and i am stil looking for help

Need to see more information about your error in order to help.

Regarding the USE="-java" thing, that's only necessary if you don't have java configured correctly on your machine. Try java-config for more help in that department.

Part of the problem may be poor reporting of the version by autoconf. After an emerge autoconf-2.57-r1 :-

    #autoconf --version
    Autoconf version 2.13

anything relying on version reporting is getting a blast from the past.

The portage-2.0.50_pre9.ebuild was what did the trick for yours truly on my ~x86 system

kde-base fails witht the following error message:
Quote:

configure.in:43: but the definition used by this AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
configure.in:43: comes from Automake 1.7.6. You should recreate
configure.in:43: aclocal.m4 with aclocal and run automake again.

make: *** [all] Error 2

!!! ERROR: kde-base/kdebase-3.2.0 failed.

I have re-emerged autocon and auto make. that did not help. It seems to want automake version whereas I am reporting 1.7.9. I do not really have tiome to trouble-shoot, if anybody has delt with this, please advise.
