When I boot and sometimes when playing with services, I get this message:
Code:
* Caching service dependencies...
 * Service 'vcron' already provide 'cron'!;
 * Not adding service 'vixie-cron'...

Originally I had vixie-cron installed and vcron not installed... it looked like Gentoo has been confusing the two in portage - doesn't vcron == vixie-cron? Yet there are two entries in sys-apps for each one.

Anyway, I tried to fix it by emerge -C vixie-cron && emerge vcron so that it should, theoretically, forget about vcron. But, no dice, it was the same.

Any ideas where to look to get rid of this? I don't like blemishes, even harmless ones!

They are both the same and vixie-cron is the right name. When updating vixie-cron the ebuild should have done the right thing and you should'nt see this error (maybe a bug in the ebuild).

To fix it try
Code:

rc-update del vcron
rm /etc/init.d/vcron
rc-update add vixie-cron default

See also bug 35781.

tomk pointed out that there are a lot of people having issues with this. The official solution thread is here: Minor service dependancy annoyance... Please post there for further assistance on this topic.

Moving from Other Things Gentoo.
