Check your log files for anything PAM-related (/var/log/*) or watch your syslog daemon spit out everything on tty12 if configured to do so (the default syslog-ng.conf does this).

1. make sure your user logon is member of wheel group
2. /etc/security/access.conf

Do either FAQ entry on "SU" or "sticky" thread in Installing Gentoo help?

I did copy my /etc/pam.d/ directory to another box and did an diff on that with no difference at all. Please help
