I'm currently running kernel 2.6.0 and XFree86 4.3.99.901 (4.3.0 would not compile) and I'm trying to recompile SDL because everything is running beautifully in XFree86 except that OpenGL applications crash X immediately and kick me back to gdm. Anyway, svgalib refuses to build and gives me the following errors:

which occurs for all three versions of svgalib in portage. Has anyone seen a similar situation they might be able to help out with?

I'm currently using gcc 3.3.2; gcc 3.2.3 presented the same errors.

If you need additional information, just ask.

It's compiling fine with me using 2.6.0 and Xfree 4.3.902.

Could you check to see if /usr/include/linux is actually pointing to your /usr/src/linux/include/linux directory?

It looks like a problem with your header files. they may be from an older kernel version.

No luck. file informed me that it was not a symlink (I had previously emerged the 2.6.0 kernel headers) but I am still encountering the same problem after symlinking it to /usr/src/linux/include/linux.

Although in my case the emerge appears to work perfectly fine up until this point. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm using gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.1_rc2 (though the rpoblem occured with rc1 before it too) with linux-headers 2.6.0. It's fairly annoying as I have a whole bunch of stuff dependent on svgalib that won't install until I get this sorted out.

There's a fix on Bugzilla:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37812

Just copy the patch to /usr/portage/media-libs/svgalib/files and add an appropriate epatch line to the ebuild.

I have kernel 2.6.1-gentoo, and the 2.4.19-r1 headers
(I read several threads that suggested that many things
would compile better with the 2.4 headers, even on a
2.6 kernel). Does that matter in this case?

I have a directory of files at /usr/include/linux. Should I
delete them and make a symlink? Should I recompile
everything I have done so far?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Still need help with this.

I tried renaming /usr/include/linux and linking
/usr/src/linux/include/linux to /usr/include/linux, but
svgalib still wouldn't compile (different error messages):

I had this same problem, and I had to recompile the kernel with modules turned on to get it to work. Other than that no changes where needed in the /usr/include/linux realm, I just left it as the normal directory. (Using kernel 2.6.1-gentoo-r1)

For those having trouble applying the patch, here is a step by step:

1) Get the patch from https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37812
File is called 'kernel-headers26-compile.patch

2) As root user, move this file to /usr/portage/media-libs/svgalib/files/

3) Edit the ebuild to make the new patch be applied.

eg nano -w /usr/portage/media-libs/svgalib/svgalib-1.9.17-r3.ebuild

4) Change from this:

Code:
src_unpack() {
        unpack ${A}

        cd ${S}
        epatch ${FILESDIR}/${P}-gentoo.patch

        # Get it to work with kernel 2.6
        epatch ${FILESDIR}/${P}-linux2.6.patch

        # Get modversions.h include right if we have CONFIG_MODVERSIONS set.
        epatch ${FILESDIR}/${P}-modversions_h.patch

        # Disable kernel module support while building stages #38403
        if [ `use build` ] ; then
                sed -i 's:installmodule ::' Makefile
        fi
}

To this:

Code:
src_unpack() {
        unpack ${A}

        cd ${S}
        epatch ${FILESDIR}/${P}-gentoo.patch

        # Get it to work with kernel 2.6
        epatch ${FILESDIR}/${P}-linux2.6.patch

        # Get modversions.h include right if we have CONFIG_MODVERSIONS set.
        epatch ${FILESDIR}/${P}-modversions_h.patch

        # Disable kernel module support while building stages #38403
        if [ `use build` ] ; then
                sed -i 's:installmodule ::' Makefile
        fi

        epatch ${FILESDIR}/kernel-headers26-compile.patch
}

5) Now just emerge.
eg. emerge svgalib

I'm also getting this error -- anyone got any ideas how to get past it?

OK, forget the patch (or at least, I could). A mate told me in irc to:

Code:

USE=build emerge svgalib

... which I did, and it compiled fine! Go try it quick...!

Credit: apparently he got the fix off the gentoo forums...

.. or just emerge svgalib-1.9.18-r1, which fully supports 2.6 kernels out of the box.

I am another one that could not get the patch to work along with either the 2.4 or 2.6 linux-headers. Perhaps the builder of the patch had different parameters set that didn't make it into the patch instructions?

At any rate I used this simple tip -

USE=build emerge svgalib

This worked perfectly with no extra patch applied whatsoever. :lol: Before this I tried to emerge all the other svgalibs ebuilds, but to NO avail, before I went looking for a fix.

Doesn't seem like the best solution to me. What exactly does this flag do?

I fixed it by upgradeing to the 2.6.6-r1 kernel headers. Also fixed mplayer, samba, sash, and some other failing packages.
