display keeps crashing

I have had this problem on one machine for quite a while. After a few days (or weeks with luck), the screen goes black, and I can't recover without restarting. I have tried multiple cables and multiple video ports on the machine. Rebooting immediately "solves" (in the short term) the problem.

Any idea what might cause this error (the "No such file or directory" message seems very interesting), and how I might prevent it?

seems to be the problem. A brief web search suggests it might be a driver problem triggered by your screen turning off for power saving, but I may well have missed something/a lot/... .
