'emerge -vu gimp-print' hangs at this point every time I try it:
Code:
<snip>
rm: cannot remove `': Invalid argument
 gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I../.. -I../../include -I../../include -Wall -Wcast-align -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -Wwrite-strings -Werror-implicit-function-declaration -Winline -finline-limit=1048576 -I/usr/include/gtk-1.2 -I/usr/include/glib-1.2 -I/usr/lib/glib/include -I/usr/X11R6/include -march=i686 -O3 -pipe -MT libgimpprintui_la-print-image-thumbnail.lo -MD -MP -MF .deps/libgimpprintui_la-print-image-thumbnail.Tpo -c print-image-thumbnail.c  -fPIC -DPIC -o .libs/libgimpprintui_la-print-image-thumbnail.o

The biggest problem is that it takes the entire system with it. The CPU goes to only 3% but the system crawls to a near halt. The proc 'cc1' is hogging all the mem (and swapping like a banshee), so it must be trying to do something.

Anyone else seeing this?

[Edit] - Sorry for not giving specifics on versions. This problem occurs when upgrading to gimp-print-4.3.25. (I'm currently on 4.3.21).

Seeing it, but no idea what to do about it (other than wait for a fix).

OK, I originally wondered if I had a corrupt gtk+ install but since others are seeing this I'll assume that's not the case. Besides, cc1 just sits there consuming all available memory until it eventually crashes gnome, so you wouldn't suspect USE flags or such (or would you?).

A bug report has been submitted: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35269

I'm running gcc-3.3.2-r3 with gtk+-1.2.10-r10 (and gtk+-2.2.4-r1 also installed). Is anyone running on a vastly different environment than this (i.e. gcc-3.2)?

Also, wangxiaohu's question is a good one. Has ANYONE successfully emerged this?

You've got to use CFLAGS -O2, not -O3.

The following worked for me:

Code:
CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O2 -pipe" emerge -u gimp-print

Change the arch to your flavor but be sure and use the '-O2' flag.

See bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35234
