There are random crashes of xorg with nvidia driver and gcc-3.4.x on pentium4 compiled with march/mtune=pentium4. To solve it just change pentium4 to pentium3 in your CFLAGS.
PS Thanks to lv for gcc ebuilds! :)

Oh no, not that bug again...

Hang on, you haven't actually got a Pentium M have you? If so:

Code:
-march=pentium-m

2 robmoss2k: you mean it's better to use pentium-m for pentium4 processors?

Heh, no, I mean it's better to use pentium-m for Pentium M processors :P -march=pentium4 problems tend to relate to people using the flag on architectures they shouldn't do, such as the P-M.

the pentium sticker on my laptop says both 4 and m, and according to uname -a it's a mobile intel pentium 4 - m CPU

what does that mean I have?

a couple of times I've been logged out for no reason, but that seems to have been fixed now that I don't have a sytem partly compiled with 3.4.0 and 3.4.1

Can you post the output of /proc/cpuinfo please?

AFAIR Pentium 4 Mobile is a simple Pentium 4 with ability to downclock and maybe less power consumption.

Yeah, the Pentium M and the Pentium 4 M are quite different CPUs. It is basically a Pentium 4 with lower power consumption and speed-stepping (or whatever it is called.) So I do believe the flag:
Code:
-march=pentium4

is what you are wanting to go for on that

No, the Pentium M is also missing 13 instructions from the Pentium 4 set. (Or is it nine? I can never remember.) So if there's an 'M' on the sticker, you probably want to go for -march=pentium-m.

My Desktop Pentium 4 can lower CPU power too if it overheat.

I would say Desktop Pentium 4 = -march=pentium4

Pentuim-M and Pentium-M 4/3/2 is -march=pentium-m

total chaos now ^^

ups.. lil late but however... have fun guys

well, since there seems to be some confusion about it, here's what cat /proc/cpuinfo:

Code:
processor   : 0
vendor_id   : GenuineIntel
cpu family   : 15
model      : 2
model name   : Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 - M CPU 1.80GHz
stepping   : 7
cpu MHz      : 1794.491
cache size   : 512 KB
fdiv_bug   : no
hlt_bug      : no
f00f_bug   : no
coma_bug   : no
fpu      : yes
fpu_exception   : yes
cpuid level   : 2
wp      : yes
flags      : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe cid
bogomips   : 3530.75

I'm hoping that that's the same as a p4 rather than a pm, since I not long ago finished a emerge -e world, and I have a lot of stuff installed... (591 packages)

That's a Pentium 4 Mobile Edition, so yes, that's a -march=pentium4.

Looks like a glibc/nptl bug to me, but fair point - from a "it should just work" point of view, certainly you want to do what you said above.

Congratulations, robmoss with a new status! What projects you're going to maintain if not a secret?

little update on what packages fail to compile (if anybody is interested ;)

first off, versions:
gcc-3.4.1-r1
glibc-2.3.4.20040619 (-nptl)
linux26-headers-2.6.7-r3

following packages wont compile:
groff-1.19
db-3.2.9-r10
mplayer-1.0_pre5 (pre4 worked fine)
openoffice (of course ;)

im rather puzzled, to weeks ago i did emerge -e world and
the only two packages broken were DirectFB and some other package.
maybe if i doe emerge -e world for the third time totally different packages will fail? ;)

loads of stuff still fails here, with linux26-headers-2.6.6 but the rest the same as you, stuff like libsdl, directfb, xine-lib, transcode, faac2, vcdimager and I think libgnomecanvasmm

I do have that weird libtool problem though which is responsible for some of them
