did i make a mistake in ordering this?
i ordered it last night (friday) after finding out that my GF2 MX400 64MB vid card could not play the new Deus Ex: Invisible War demo.
so.. does anyone have any recomendations for a better video card that is under 100$, has at least 128mb of ram, and will go into my agp4X mobo? must support at least pixel shader 1.1 and directX 9....
oh yeah, it also has to be on NewEgg.com
quickly.. cause they ship it the day after tommorow, so i have 24 hours to chancel my order and order a different video card..
Thanks..

Yes.
The 5600 is going to be alot faster in dx9 than the 5200. You will not need more than 128 meg vram for the forseeable future.
But if you using Linux then you wont be using DX9. Therfore a GF4 will be great value, as would a Radeon 9200. |

The 5600 is not a very fast card, though. Keep in mind the "fast" one is the 5600 Ultra which still underperforms the old geforce4 4200 last I checked. I'd only get an FX card if it was a 5700 Ultra or above.
You might consider an ATI Radeon 9600 which is a little cheaper than the 5600.

but for windows gaming.. would the 5600XT be good?
i would get an ATI card, but ive heard that the linux drivers for them absolutely BLOW..
and, as soon as i get a decent wireless network card, i am going to use linux a lot more than i can now.
is the 9600SE model better than the regular 9600? what about the XT model?
or would a 128mb 5200 Ultra suit my needs?
thanx..

i am reading the reviews for this 128mb 5200Ultra, and this card seems to be stacking up against a 5600 plain about equal.. outperforimng it at higher resolutions.
at 119$ this is the top end of my budget, or i would blow the 168 for a 5600Ultra, but i dot have that..
in two months ill sell whatever card i get now and get 5950Ultra
but is that card up there ^^ any good?

In all honesty, I think you should wait/get the 5700 Ultra. It appears to be a significant upgrade from the 5600 and the paltry 5200 which enthusiasts everywhere have sacked as a shit card. The GeForce4 does outperform both cards unless you engage the anti-aliasing, then they eat the GeForce4 for lunch. I'm more of a quality image kind of guy then I am raw frames per second.
The ATI cards in anti-alias mode shame nVidia. They're also cheaper, and apperently are delivering better DVD and 2D image quality. They're developing drivers for linux and the current set are supposedly immature. I can't vouch for any of this, it's just that I want to upgrade too and I can't make up my mind, but I'm leaning more and more for ATI.
By the way, you might think you don't care about anti-aliased games, but my Bro has the Radeon 9800 and he plays games at 1280X1024 and it is incredible. No pixelation. Everything is super smooth.
Well for me it will either be a ATI 8600 pro or xt or the nVidia 5700. The only advantge I see with nVidia at this point is the ability to drop it in and do nothing to my xfree86 config. |

ill be getting a fx5600 ultra/fx5700 within 6 months. 40 fps in q3a with 2xfsaa and 4xaniso on my ti4200, not to mention crappy fps in ut2003 on medium graphics settings just cant cut it anymore _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)
