I'm hoping to build a completely quiet computer, no fans except for the power supply, using a slow 1.0ghz duron, passive cpu cooler and ATA flash card instead of a whirling hard drive. Is this feasible? I really am tired of computer fan, harddrive noise! Performance is not so much an issue in that I just want to use it to ssh into my other computers locked away in a closet. _________________ When hunting monsters one should take care not to become one. |

i would use a via cpu/mb with zalman fanless cooler and seagate HD with rubbermounts(i cant hear mine). Use 12 V ATX adaptor, run of carbatterie with charger and have no noise, not even PSU. _________________ Using Gentoo since 2002. |

Seagate HD is very quiet, flash card would be very slow.
Via has several fanless motherboards with integrated cpu's.

I think if the draw is low enough there are a couple totally fanless PSUs out there (and several more "fan once in a while" PSUs).
This is one of them:

Do you really use carbatteries? Even though the lunchbox cluster is plugged in, that kind of brings to mind the linuxbios cluster DQ |

Wow, thanks for the good ideas. I didn't realize the abundance of choices I could make. I really like that via motherboard/chipset and also the fanless power supply. Although running off of a car battery and converter would seem to kill two birds with one stone (power supply & ups), except for shutdown I guess. My harddrive makes a whine that I'm convinced is a health hazard. _________________ When hunting monsters one should take care not to become one. |
