Seems like there might be a bug regarding offline/online modes.

I tried to re-start Steam in offline mode, and it did (if I remember right, it was not today), but then it of course popped up the no-no box, and closed itself. Now when I launch Steam, “SteamUpdater: Error: Steam needs to be online to update, but was set to offline mode.” happens, and the program stops.
Kindest of regardses.

I guess I can still do that, but I digress.
I tried all of the Penumbra titles and they do not work. They are all available on Desura though.

penumbra linux installer works fine

there is also an ebuild in sunrise overlay. (I might import it into the main tree when I have time since I own the collection myself)

Ah, I thought I read from lists that Penumbra was one of those that worked (via Steam, that is).

In any case, tried some other demos, I wonder if others have the same results. I think it was Trine and Cogs, or Waveform, or Darwinia, that would install seemingly fine, but when trying to launch them, they'd take me to the title's store-page, where it would pop up the “you're not welcome here” message.

Wondering why they would take me to that page.

Two of those did that, and two of them didn't install properly.
Need to look into it more after some Zzz hunting...

You can get around this by running steam with ./steam.sh steam://store
gives full access to the client, but if you try to download TF2 it will say "servers busy" even though they aren't, because you're not allowed to download it.

It's up to you if you want to use this or not but from everything I've been seeing from valve I find it very unlikely that they mind. They have had several opportunities to block us out or at least say something to the community and haven't.
Not to mention the fact that all of those Unity Ubuntu users have this workaround built right into the icon for steam, all those users have to do is rightclick the icon and select store. There is no way valve is going to start banning accounts for that.

For these reasons I've been using the client even though I'm not a beta tester.

even if they would ban people, it might just be invalid, cause there is nothing in the EULA about this particular topic

so they either block us or not. I can run "steam.sh" with whatever additional command line options I like.

Me: is Valve going to do anything to the people exploiting the bug to run it on a non-beta account?
Valve Employee: no. it's valid data.
But, that is just what they thinks. I'm also not going to do it just in case they are wrong.

Also,
Valve Employee: so just band together 400 people, and I'm sure we'll be booting yet another virtual machine :P

I just bought SS3, but it's only rendering a black screen, with both 304 and 310 drivers. :(

*Edit*

Got it to work. It was the setting MAX 3D RENDERING MPIX, which should not be set lower than the screen resolution.

FYI, I just committed the splitted ebuilds to gamerlay overlay http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/? ... ;a=summary. Ebuild development happens at https://github.com/anyc/steam-overlay.

I moved away from the single ebuild approach and split it up into 3 ebuilds: steam-installer (contains only installer related information), steam-client-meta (pulls in dependencies for the client) and steam-meta (that depends on the previous two). I think this makes it easier to maintain and test things. In the steam-meta ebuild, we could also integrate conditional dependencies for game or engine ebuilds. I'm not part of the beta, so I couldn't test game-related stuff. What do you think?

BTW, I was talking with the quoted person above in the steam linux group chat. He solved his own problem, the solution was to set the "max 3d rendering mpix" size to the same (or higher?) as the games screen resolution. Just mentioning it in case anyone else has the same problem.

I'm getting the following error:

Code: Select all

Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1352503901_client)
LD_DEBUG="libs" ./steam shows

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.5.3/32/libstdc++.so.6: error: version lookup error: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.15' not found
Any ideas on what to do?

Not an error as far as I know (or at least not a fatal one).

Though, I switched (active one) back to 4.5 after installing 4.6, and it still works, so I'm still unsure if one simply needs it installed or actually being used... gotta try when I have the time for it I guess. But since it's not source we can build it from, I'm thinking one simply needs it installed?

Obviously I haven't looked into what it does with it. ^^;

I know this is probably a really stupid question but how do I go from the 20120520 version of xlibs to the 20121028 one?

Emerge shows 20121028 as the latest version but when I try to install it always goes back to the 20 version.

Try app-portage/eix for more informative searches. ^^;

The package app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-20121028 is still masked as 'unstable', so you would have to unmask it.

Also, the only stupid question in my opinion is the one that you do not ask.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm doing wrong, I have the testing branch enabled and it still will not obtain the 1028 version.

emerge -s shows

/etc/portage/package.use has

And the output from eix

Afaik, you should not do this.
/etc/portage/package.use has

This should go into /etc/portage/package.keywords

Nope, lots of people are. Even ubuntu users.

I was talking to someone who said it seems that only 32-bit unity users will see the tray icon 100% of the time, and it has to do with libappindicator for unity.
Apparently if you are using unity on a 64-bit machine you can install the 32-bit and still see the tray icon. I am wondering if it is possible to get it working in openbox because I don't want to install unity dependencies.
