Engage functionality in Fluxbox??

Post by plac3bo » Sun May 08, 2005 4:39 am

I just installed EFL and Engage. I've read that the default theme has broken functionality. I've changed my theme to Gant, which has supposedly fixed the functionality. From get-e.org, this is how Engage works:

Code: Select all

This is how everything works:

left click - launch app (for launch icons) restore app (iconified icons)
left hold - raise/unminimize window ("hold" definition is broken in the default
theme it will create another instance of the app you wish to unminimize.)
middle click - iconify apps
right click - config menu (for this to work you need to have examine installed. It's in e17/apps/examine in cvs)
So, let me explain what happens on my system, and then ask if others have a similar experience or if I'm just doing something wrong. My left-click launches an app. I do not have any "restore apps" (iconified). When I minimize something, it falls off the face of the planet. Only way to get it back is thru Fluxbox's iconified menu. Left-hold turns icon on Engage bar transparent, and if the app is not iconified, it will raise the app to the foreground. Middle-click does iconify, but, falls off face of planet again. Right-click menu, good.

Is anyone else not able to retreive iconified apps from engage?? Also, I have started Engage with "-I 0 -i 0" switches so nothing would be ignored. Flip-flopping those switches also does not help. Am I missing a Engage config setting or flag ... or a Fluxbox setting or something??

System is x86_64 / 2.6.11 / all E libs and Engage compiled from CVS source 5.8.2005 ... oh, and no special gcc flags, just whatever autogen/configure gave me.

Thanks.

You took the text out a bit of context (to be honest though, that section isn't very clear since it hasn't been a priority for a long time anymore, I'll try to update it a bit anyway). As you probably know there are two versions of engage. The E17 module one works fine, but is lacking features (but it also has some features that aren't in the standalone) that are in the standalone one. The "this is how it works" thing is about the default theme in the standalone version, not the GANT theme - every theme has its own control settings, and I have no idea how the GANT theme is built anymore. The GANT theme indeed does fix some of the functionality (it's stated what), but that doesn't include that the default keybindings stay the same. I'm not sure at all what the current situation is, but when that was written (almost half a year ago) everything worked and I'd also assume the keybindings were pretty similar in the GANT theme back then or I would have noted that they have changed dramatically.

The problem is that the standalone version which you are trying to use is abandoned and no longer under development (development is focused on the Engage E17 module). The entire guide assumes you are using E17. About the missing iconified apps, perhaps the Engage standalone has been broken by some of the EFL updates and hasn't been updated. Can anyone else confirm this too? If it's indeed broken, perhaps the Engage standalone stuff needs to be removed or at least there needs to be some kind of disclaimer that things may be horribly broken.

edit: I removed the gant theme hack section, it was probably outdated and I haven't confirmed if it works for half a year (it did when it was written at least) - sorry about that. Seems like the gant theme is broken btw. Application grabbing should work though.

I love the dynamic engage or ibar, and beautiful plugins.

However, the engage is quite unstable, or E, whatever. I could see 3 icons,
larger, media and small icons when icon zooming is enabled, and the mouse
disappear mysterically. Reboot the WM, everything is OK.

Just have a question about how to tweak the E, is there any GUI to do or
which configure should we modify ? I need to change the window behavior.

Any idea about the task bar or Alt-Tab alternative keybinding to swtich between
windows ?

I've been a little excited by the idea of envidence. The browser mode, just like Mac OSX's
finder is most intuititve and convinient layout for the file manager. However, evidance is
quite ugly compared with other components of E. :(
E17 shouldn't be able to make your mouse cursor disappear, haven't heard anything like that. Perhaps you've found a new bug though, I have no idea about that. You haven't read documentation before starting though (one should, the ebuilds are masked -* for a reason), at least not the important things as you don't seem to know that it's in a pre-alpha state :) In other words, alt-tab = not impletented yet, taskbar = there is no such thing yet, except Engage can be used for that. There is no control panel GUI and you can't change the window behavior (if you mean focus follows mouse). Evidence's looks depends alot on the theme and effects you choose to use, the default theme is indeed horrible - I'd suggest trying the tosh theme.

You can theme Evidence completely to your liking by:

a.) making a new theme
b.) combining the existing themes - using a bg from one theme, icons from another... (fishtank bg rocks  )

It's an extremely flexible app in that aspect.

Try some of the themes that come with Evidence, eg these two:

Code: Select all

evidence -T /usr/share/evidence/themes/LCARS
evidence -T rephormed

Thanks for the feedback vrln. I did not realize your guide was that old. I can imagine, alot has changed with Engage and/or EFL since then. Anyway, I do really like the complete E wm, but, it seems a little rough around the edges, so to speak. That is why I was hoping to at least get Engage working in Fluxbox for now. I will just have to play around with E wm and Engage on my own a little more.
The problem is that the standalone version which you are trying to use is abandoned and no longer under development (development is focused on the Engage E17 module)
I'm curious, does this mean that the current state of Engage standalone is as complete as it will ever be, or is there a chance that devs may revisit the standalone Engage code once the rest of E/EFL/etc are (more) complete?

hey :) The guide is completely modern and up to date, except that one engage standalone specific section, which is no longer there... Again sorry for not noticing it's outdated before... not many people use the standalone version anymore and I hadn't tried it for ages. I'm not the one who can answer your question (I'm not an E dev), but you could try emailing the author of Engage - at least currently all development is focused on the E17 module version though.

Hi,

I have done an update of e17 and all related libs today. Now emerge of engage fails! What can it be?

why not use the notes module from e_modules package? it can be resized via gadman etc...

enotes is outdated and afaik unmaintained atm...

I'm getting crazy soon...

emotion, ewl and e refuse to compile, all other EFL's compile well.

I emerge in the given order from get-e.org, i completly wiped out /usr/local and deleted even all configs in .e/e/config.

But every time, since 2-3 weeks, these three packages break with a segmentation fault:

Code: Select all

/bin/sh: line 1: 8189 Segmentation fault edje_cc -v -id ../../data/themes/default/bits/images default.edc ../../data/themes/default.edj
make[3]: *** [default.edj] Error 139

make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/ewl-9999/work/e17/libs/ewl'
make: *** [all] Error 2
Same for all three... is there something wrong with default.edj (edc) ?

ACCESS VIOLATION

Post by und3ad » Tue May 10, 2005 8:36 am

Every single time I try to compile the e-9999 ebuild, I get an open_wr ACCESS VIOLATION to a config.sub file (/usr/share/libtool/config.sub). This error has been the cause of my frustration for months, so it's nothing that a cvs-update can fix it seems. I believe it's related to my system somehow, but I don't know how exactly. I've even tried chmod 777 config.sub, which didn't work. I'm running out of ideas. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.. Btw, this is regardless of which part of E17 I'm compiling..
I read your e-mail.

Mr. Bones:
does

Code: Select all

export WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.7
export WANT_AUTOCONF=2.5
./autogen.sh
help?

btw: using the -9999 ebuilds massively eases up the install process :P

Hi !

Strange problem with engage module: screenshot There's no more icon in the engage dock, icon are drawn top left of the screen. Actually, without the "edit mode", the engage dock has 0 size ...
Compilation: a few hours ago.
Tried to delete my ~/.e and to re-populate it, but no luck.
Any idea ?
