This thread as well as the wiki are quite outdated/incomplete i think.

You need to download the wow.patch and applied it by either running it manually or insert the patch into the latest ebuild of wine,

Place the patch in your overlay directory for example : /usr/local/portage/app-emulation/wine/files/
Add :

Code: Select all

 epatch "${FILESDIR}"/wow_patch_0.9.16.diff
to the src-unpack section of the ebuild in the overlay. See Gentoo wiki for howto to make an overlay.

Then run

Code: Select all

ebuild wine-0.9.17.ebuild digest
Then emerge wine...

PS: i am not using wine as it does not work for me. so it's a bit of a guess...

Lol im a semi n00b at gentoo, and even more so at WoW

EDIT: Well i just figured out i dont need the minimap patch, bc i can go inside buildings, i just gotta close the minimap first. SO now the only thing i gotta fix , is not being able to select npc's

Just tried playing the other day using a cvs wine build with only the patch listed on the first page. Works flawlessly.

@asheron:

Hey Dude, thanx for your opinion on wine performance. You made me try the latest version and it works! Cannot tell if it works any better but it works as good as before...are you playing D3D or opengl?

BTW: Seen Big Lebowsky lately?

@ikshaar:

Thank you for the Instructions. I patched 0.9.8.ebuild myself, but I was not sure if .diff is handled the same way as .patch in ebuilds...maybe I can have my noob status back???
As mentioned above it works.Thank you!

Are you using cedega? Windows? If Cedega, is it wort the money?

So you got the patch, ok. Did you try to follow ikshaars other suggestions?

Copy the patch file to /usr/local/portage/app-emulation/wine/files/
Copy the wine 0.9.17 ebuild from /usr/portate/app-emulation/wine/ to /usr/local/portage/app-emulation/wine/
Copy all other files from /usr/portage/app-emulation/wine/files/ to /usr/local/portage/app-emulation/wine/files/
Fire up your favorite editor and insert "epatch "${FILESDIR}"/wow_patch_0.9.16.diff" to the end of the src-unpack section
Run ebuild wine-0.9.17.ebuild digest in /usr/local/portage/app-emulation/wine/
emerge wine
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice they are not.

Well... can you follow them is the question... i spelled it out once. Caedes too.

Here are the instructions to make an overlay. Read it !!
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Installing ... ty_Ebuilds
You only need 1 overlay "/usr/local/portage" so add that path to your /etc/make.conf as instructed in the HOWTO.

Then follow Caedes lines one by one....

Well... good.

But if you don't do the overlay, your change will be lost at next synchronization !! wine will still work but if you re-emerged it, it will stop working again... don't come crying...

Good etiquette usually involves posting your solutions as well as specs. Do you mind sharing what you did to get it to work in your case? Things you did wrong before? This will help others with similar cases so they can have a solution as well.

I've got wine 0.9.8 which seems to be the latest stable on portage. I'd rather not use 0.9.18 or move to cedega.

When I start up "wine WoW.exe -opengl" it prompts me with error dialogs saying:

Code: Select all

ERROR #132(0x85100084) Fatal Exception
Program: D:\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0073:B7DEAD60

The instruction at "0xB7DEAD60" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read".

Press OK to terminate the application
My terminal window says:

Code: Select all

seraed@ArgoX /data/games/World of Warcraft $ wine WoW.exe -opengl
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
err:opengl:process_attach Could not create default context.
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
I've seen that Error #132 is a generic WoW error from reading some posts. I also tried to look for solutions to the missing GLX extension problem, but have no success from that. Most of what I've seen says to use "eselect opengl set nvidia". But that didn't work. "eselect opengl list" shows "[1] xorg-x11 *" as the available ogl implementations.

Not quite sure where to go from here.

My Specs:
Linux 2.6.16.19 (vanilla)
Fluxbox 0.9.14
wine 0.9.8
Athlon XP 2000+
SB Audigy
GeForece FX 5700LE

You need to install nvidia driver for your video card.

emerge nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx

Thanks for the response ikshaar. I had tried to do that before on an obvious hunch that I was missing GLX (from the errors that wine reported). I searched for glx and found those two packages you suggested and when I tried to emerge the kernel (dep for glx), it fails.

Doing it again here is what I get

Code: Select all

!!! ERROR: media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r6 failed
Call stack:
  ebuild.sh, line 1539: Called dyn_compile

!!! Unable to make IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes V=1 SYSSRC=/usr/src/linux SYSOUT=/usr/src/linux clean module.
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
I'll check out the other forums for nvidia driver issues in regards to portage builds.

Check that your /usr/src/linux point to current Linux kernel.

Code: Select all

uname -a
will tell you what kernel you are running now.
/usr/src/linux should point to the same kernel version.

You cut error message too short to see what happened...

Just an update on this. Went to http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_nVidia_Drivers to get the fix on my emerge issue.

In the Kernel Config menu I enabed module unloading as instructed and I was able to emerge the nvidia-kernel and glx just fine. I am also now able to set the opengl interface to use nvidia (it is listed now). Hopefully this will work out but I won't know until I get home from work.

Yes, I know which kernel i'm using just had to recompile with module unloading support. Thanks for the help btw! Had to think on it for a bit as to where to find the solution. 5 hours of sleep and 6 cans of Mt Dew over 3 days didn't help ><

As soon as I get home I'll update on whether WoW decides to run or not.

Stable release didn't work. Installed the unstable drivers. They didn't want to install. Said there was a conflict with nvidiafb, so I set that as a module instead of built-in (I'm seeing alot of my problems solved by setting support as modules lately ><). Recompiled, merged unstable drivers. Still no luck. Luckily I remembered that I should edit xorg.conf and I did find that glx was commented out in the modules section. Uncommented it. WoW now fires up; and though it looks fine, runs like garbage to the extent that it is very unplayable. Atleast its running though!

I'll keep looking for solutions to the FPS problem. Thanks ikshaar!

Stable release never worked for me either. Compiles fine, but does not load. There are other threads in this forum on the 6xxx nvidia module problem, suggestion is to use unstable as you did.

Regarding your fps problem, could you be a little bit more specific? What's your fps and where? How many other players around? I was never satisfied with the fps of the latest stable 8xxx nvidia drivers, 7xxx series worked much better on my 6600 (which was worse compared to the 6xxx driver versions, if i remember right).

Well one thing that crippled my FPS.. the FW (FastWrite in BIOS), you need to disable it - as strange as it sounds.

Not as a tease, but to show you what you can obtain when your Gentoo system is set right. Here with cedega :

@ Caedes & ikshaar:

Your post above about patching 0.9.17 says to run

Code: Select all

# ebuild wine-0.9.17.ebuild digest
Followed by merging wine.

Can you just merge wine after the ebuild digest, or do I also have to do the following (taken from the How To that ikshaar posted)

Code: Select all

# ebuild /usr/local/portage/category/program/program-version.ebuild digest
# ebuild /usr/local/portage/category/program/program-version.ebuild unpack
# ebuild /usr/local/portage/category/program/program-version.ebuild compile
# ebuild /usr/local/portage/category/program/program-version.ebuild install
I'm using it for 0.9.18 (if i'm still seeing performance issues in 0.9.18, I'll go ahead and disable FW)

Seraed: no you don't need to do that.

digest is the only step needed because we changed code inside ebuild. Once done, back to using emerge as usual.
