gentoo 2005.0 (installed at this version stage3 tarbell and used as many packages from the cd as possible) on an amd64 box

i installed my first gentoo 2005.0 (or ne other) on my hp pavilion ze45xx about a month ago and it was kool ...i felt like a real computer-type dude LOL
but seriously -i got a pavilion zv52xx (i nnever really know the box it came in said something and the software tells me otherwise ...not important tho) and that was koo till it wasnt koo no more

ok im sane now -the problems first poped up when i tried to update the system ...first on the list was to compile gcc-3.4.4 and that failed. then i got firefox-bin and that wouldnt run then on wine during the install ...cant run c compiled programs
i started lookin for solutions and tried somethings ...nothing worked ...fount this thread n tried my_worlds solution and i get the EXACT same error:

Code: Select all

checking whether the C compiler works... configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.
If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'.
See `config.log' for more details.
make[1]: *** [configure-target-libstdc++-v3] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.4.4/work/build'
make: *** [profiledbootstrap] Error 2

!!! ERROR: sys-devel/gcc-3.4.4 failed.
!!! Function gcc_do_make, Line 1214, Exitcode 2
!!! emake failed with profiledbootstrap
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.
when i get to the point where u compile gcc

...ive followed this guide to the letter 2xs now and jus lookin to see if there is any other solution to this problem ...or has my last 2 days of compiling gone to waste?!?

sidenote:
i get the following error when attempting to install azureus-bin (acutally when mergeing systray the pre-req):

Code: Select all

*** Semantic Error: You need to modify your classpath, sourcepath, bootclasspath, and/or extdirs setup. Jikes could not find package "java.lang" in:
                .
                .
yes those are periods with nothing around them...

any help on either problem would be WONDERFUL ...cause at this point im about to jus put x86 on this thing and call it a day!

I did:

Code: Select all

emerge -s emul-
in order to figure out what emulation packages I had installed. I then did

Code: Select all

emerge unmerge <all the emul-* packages found above>
I then removed EVERY file from /emul/linux/x86/usr/lib/. In order to be safe, I just moved them to a backup directory:

Code: Select all

mkdir ~/emul.lib.bak
mv /emul/linux/x86/usr/lib/* ~/emul.lib.bak
I then did

Code: Select all

emerge -uDe world
I did this just to make sure that any of the files that I had removed will be replaced if they are really necessary. It is probably overkill, and it isn't finished yet, but it is well past the point in glibc where the sizeof error occurred.

If I have to, I figure I'll re-install the emul- packages as I find I need them in real life.

Just want to say thanks to My_World and all that have posted. I'll note that if you have an old install, at the first step of emerging gcc with multilib, follow the prompt at the end that says how to switch to the new gcc. My_World, you might add that note to your post-turned-HOWTO. Thanks! :D

Also, I didn't get the 32-bit lib for sandbox after emerging portage... not a big deal for me though... but does anyone know how to install it?
