Code: Select all

emerge -pv sys-auth/consolekit

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] sys-auth/consolekit-0.4.1 USE="doc pam policykit -debug" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Having similar problems on KDE ... can detect CDRoms but not DVD disks.

I tried putting
exec ck-launch-session startkde

into .xinitrc but it did not resolve the problem.

I have tried all the other bits of advice in various postings about this problem, and am in cdrom and cdrw groups and hald and consolekit are running.

Is above command in .xinitrc correct?

thanks, Ian

I'm having the same problem again with a new installation. I can play dvd's cd's and mount data cd's as root but I can only play audio cd's as an ordinary user. It seems to be some kind of gnome issue. When I insert a dvd or data cd I get a gnome popup that says:

Code: Select all

Not Authorized to mount volume
Here are my groups

Code: Select all

# groups roger
disk wheel floppy audio cdrom video cdrw usb users portage plugdev wireshark roger
and here is my ~.xinitrc

Code: Select all

export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session

As an update, I'm having the same problem with usb drives. They automount if I'm logged in as root, but I get the same popup when I do it as an ordinary user:

Code: Select all

Unable to mount 2.1GB Filesystem
Not Authorized
Even though my Logitech usb mouse/keyboard continues to work just fine.

I tried running gnome-mount manually to see what happens but its not installed -- and blocked

Code: Select all

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "gnome-mount" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- gnome-base/gnome-mount-0.8-r2 (masked by: missing keyword)
I'm running on amd 64

Code: Select all

Linux livecd 2.6.36-gentoo-r5 #5 SMP Tue Jan 18 13:46:48 EST 2011 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

2nd update: When I attempt to eject the audio disk -- that automounts and plays as a normal user -- by right clicking the Audio Disc desktop icon, I get the following popup:

Code: Select all

Unable to eject Audio Disc
Not Authorized
but ...

Code: Select all

eject -T /dev/sr1
... works just fine. Is this this some kind of pam problem?

If you'd read even one of recent threads about such problems, you'd know gnome-mount is obsolete.

While ck-list-sessions claims things should be fine, still check if "udisks --mount" works from a terminal.

Its hard to tell with some of these longer threads which parts of them are OBE so I really appreciate the help.

As an ordinary user ...

Code: Select all

roger@livecd ~ $ udisks --mount /dev/sr0
Mount failed: Not Authorized
and as root ...

Code: Select all

livecd roger # udisks --mount /dev/sr0
Mounted /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/sr0 at /media/LASTWALTZ

If you check ck-list-sessions again and the result will still be positive, next question will be 'ls -l /dev/sr0'.

Well, this time result is obviously negative - both active and is-local is FALSE.
Also, you seem to be missing a '+' in those permissions from acl.

I haven't tried to play movies on my laptop before, but I just did and I have exactly the same problem -- I can do it as root but not as an ordinary user. Also ck-list-sessions gives a similar output:

Code: Select all

roger@vrc-53dbpwufbfd ~ $ ck-list-sessions
Session3:
	unix-user = '1000'
	realname = '(null)'
	seat = 'Seat4'
	session-type = ''
	active = FALSE
	x11-display = ':0'
	x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
	display-device = '/dev/tty1'
	remote-host-name = ''
	is-local = FALSE
	on-since = '2011-02-05T16:09:52.403570Z'
	login-session-id = '3'

roger@vrc-53dbpwufbfd ~ $ ls -l /dev/sr0
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Feb 5 11:13 /dev/sr0
I thought I followed the handbook and install docs for both machines so I can't believe this problem is unknown?

OK, I ran this command:

Code: Select all

emerge -avq1 --noconfmem dbus dbus-glib pambase shadow udisks upower polkit consolekit
... lifted from this topic:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-85 ... sions.html

... and noticed I didn't have consolekit in my use flags. I added it and then (re-)emerged the above listed packages and it fixed my problem.
