There was a slight misunderstanding about the nvidia-drivers. That should be solved now.
About the ati-drivers, the purpose is a simple one - to prevent anyone from installing xorg-server-1.3.0 and have X die on them. One can always install the ati-drivers with xorg-server-1.3.0 applying the patch posted earlier in this thread, by adding the ati-drivers ebuild to a local overlay.

I have a small problem with the new version of ati-drivers (8.36.5). Everytime I try to watch a movie (mplayer and xine), X restarts.
I am running Xorg-server 1.3 (I applied the patch that I found in this post) with kernel 2.6.19-ck2.

A workaround is to use the x11 driver instead of the xv driver.

Code: Select all

cat /etc/portage/package.mask |grep xorg
>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.3.0.0
Masking it saves the day, for now.

I'd like to know how do I install "ati-drivers-8.36.5"?

When I do "emerge ati-drivers", the version is 8.35.5, not 8.36.5.

Thanks,

Well, today AMD delivered the 8.37.6 Linux display driver. Affecting this driver the most is support for X server version 1.3 and appended several other fixes along with a slight upgrade to the AMD Catalyst Control Center Linux Edition. While no AIGLX support was added or no new features introduced, the upgrade should be worth the time.
