Now i can't get my xorg 7 to run anymore. What happens is it compiles fine and is finished with everything, but when i type startx it won't find it. At first i thought i had some path issues but a find / -iname startx reveals that it is not present on my system at all.

How is that possible?

BTW that exact same thing happend to a friend of mine as well.
Have you checked that startx really is installed? It should be merged by x11-apps/xinit, try remerge that.
Did you let xorg-x11 be pulled in as dependencies or did you merge the xorg-x11 metapackage?

for the record, not sure if both of these hurdles have been mentioned, so here they are for anyone else with problems...

i'm emerging gnome-light on top of modular X, with firefox use flag and ran into 2 blocks of virtual/x11...

www-client/mozilla-launcher needs x11-apps/xdpyinfo. Saw this in another post as well.
gnome-base/control-center needs 3 packages to get around virtual/x11: x11-libs/libXxf86misc, x11-apps/xinit, and x11-apps/xset. The first 2 packages were unmasked in the process of unmasking modular X dependencies, but xset was missing out.

Thus, I needed to unmask the both of those and everything was good to go. compiling now...hopefully it's error-free when i wake up!

Can someone confirm this? I keep getting this upon X startup... It wasn't there one week ago, and I don't remember any critical package to this hitting the portage tree...

I have been testing Xorg modular for 2-3 weeks now.

Did anyone noticed a longer delay than before when switching workspace for the desktop or applications to be redrawn ? Most obvious is for gdesklets which can take 1-2 seconds to be redrawn when I leave a workspace with a full screen application to a workspace where desktop is visible.

Althought visible mainly because of gdesklets, other apps can be affected too. Once the "memory" seems refreshed, I can swicth back on forth faster. But if I work for a certain time on same workspace, next switch will produce same effects.

I am not clear yet if it is to be considered a Xorg bug or that other apps need to be rewritten somehow...

Greetings

Migrated to Modular X, and I seem to have lost my opengl implementation, I followed the migration doc to the letter but... :?

Code: Select all

opengl-update --get-implementation
xorg-x11
OK

Code: Select all

glxinfo
glxinfo: error while loading shared libraries: libGLU.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
Current Operating System: Linux trillian 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 #9 PREEMPT Tue Mar 14 19:20:28 CST 2006 i686
...
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
...
I have the misfortune of having a i915 chipset in my laptop so moving to Modular X seemed to be the best logical step.

I verified if the i915 was correctly detected and:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep i915
[drm] Initialized i915 1.1.0 20040405 on minor 0:
/* and */
dmesg | grep agpgart
Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected an Intel 915GM Chipset.
agpgart: Detected 7932K stolen memory.
agpgart: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xc0000000
OK
It's specified in my xorg.conf

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
        Identifier "i810Drv"
        Driver "i810"
        VideoRam 131072
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
	BoardName "i915"
        Screen 0
        Option "DevicePresence" "yes"
        Option "MonitorLayout" "CRT,LFP"
        Option "NoAccel" "false"
        Option "DRI" "true"
EndSection
As a result of this (I guess) I also can't emerge media-libs/mesa-6.4.2-r2 and dev-python/pyopengl-2.0.0.44 (wich is a dependancy for gimp which I need for development.)

Should I unmerge xorg, re-emerge monolith-xorg and start from scratch? OR is there some magic way I don't know about but someone out ther does... :) I hope someone can help

Thanks

modular xorg hosed my system

  • Quote

Post by cconroy » Wed Mar 15, 2006 5:21 am

okay. so yesterday I decided to try to upgrade to modular X. I unmasked the necessary packages and compiled along my merry way. I then found that other packages wanted to re-emerge the old Xorg and I couldn't get my 3d acceleration to work. so, I decided to call off the whole thing and revert back...I had made a quickpkg of the old install as the guide suggestedk, but in a moment of stupidity before trying to revert pack also quickpkg'd the new one in case i decided to try again...well that apparently overwrote the original quickpkg i made to fall back onto.

i figure no biggs and just recompile.

today i go to reboot and I can't get X up. Even though fglrx and agpgart are loading successfully in the bootloader, X complains about there not being any glx or fglrx.

What on earth went wrong and how do I fix it? I've tried emerging various versions of ati-drivers, 2 different kernels...all to no avail. all i did was follow the guide on the gentoo docs and now I have no X!

This is explained in the wiki and in the Gentoo guide how to deal with it !!
What on earth went wrong and how do I fix it?
This is packages marked unstable.... you were warned before. There is no assurance that you can back track...

Now you can unmerge all packages added by Xorg-7, delete the bad config files and re-emerge and reconfigure X-6.8 ... or reinstall Xorg-7 and file bug reports to help stabilize Xorg-7.

Maybe try to reemerge your drivers? I don't have a ati card but I assume fglrx is a kernel module? In that case it could be that the xorg-part of the drivers have become corrupted and/or it have been a version mismatch between the kernelmodule and the xorg-driver. Have had problems with both with nvidia. Rermeging driver && eselect opengl set drivername && shutdown -r now usually fixes it when that happends.

Ok. So i tried doing an emerge --unmerge xorg-x11 and then re-emerged 6.8 completely. That is the one that is complaining about lacking glx. Is there anyway I can just emerge the glx module that is now missing? (it is not included in the ati-drivers)

Which config files should I have deleted to try and roll back?

okay...so i followed the instructions on the wiki for the AMD64 GL issues (even tho i'm running a p4) which had me relink a bunch of stuff (i.e. ln -s /usr/lib/opengl/ati/include/gl.h)

after doing that, the xorg log shows me that glx is now being loaded...so I'm halfway back to a usable system (ironically enough, I'm now typing this on a Kororaa livecd cuz I lent my knoppix to a friend)

it says it can't find fglrx...this is after me re-emerging ati-drivers, running the eseelect update command, and rebooting...and doing that like 3 times just to make sure. i'm assuming in the process of upgrading some other symlink got borked and needs to be fixed. if anyone knows how i can let X find fglrx, i will be very, very grateful. thanks.

Hi,

I tried to install modular Xorg using the gentoo HOWTO.
I uninstalled the old monolythic Xorg.
It was fine .. it merged a lot of dependancies ... and it tried to emerge the xorg-server-1.0.1-r4 package.

The error is :

I found only one guy who posted the same problem on the xgl post on page 16, but no answer was given ...

I put thoses drivers in my make.conf
INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse"
VIDEO_CARDS="nv nvidia mesa"

I tried removing one or both of nv and mesa drivers but the result is the same.

I tried to upgrade my gcc from version 3.3.4 to version 3.4.5. Not any change either.

I'm not using amd64. (a symlink bug for amd64 can provides errors that look like mine)

I tried to have a look at the dependancy but it's too difficult for me ...

Anyone have any idea on how to solve this problem ?

I have successfully installed Modular XOrg 7.0, working on a Matrox G550.
Now, I would like to succeed in getting up the second Monitor ("TwinView"), as before.
Unfortunately, I did not find any "UseMatroxHal" configuration parameter any more.
Can anybody hint a clue, where this went to?

You're not alone, Nova00X. This seems to be an Nvidia-specific issue so far, according to the bug reports. Let me ask you: are you using an older Nvidia kernel module because your card is unsupported by newer versions?

I didn't especially looked at nvidia packages ...
The error occured, having nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r6 and nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r5 installed on my box.

My graphic card is a GeForce FX 5200 and i don't think it isn't supported by the latest nvidia drivers...

nvidia-kernel is actually available on version 1.0.8178-r3 (~) ... So I just upgraded it and try to emerge xorg-server again ... But the error is always here ... i'll have a look at the discussion in bugzilla ... seems helpfull.

I am running modular X on a Via Epia SP 13000 (which has a CN400), using the openchrome drivers (http://www.openchrome.org/). I am using the code from their subversion repository, and DRI is working. What drivers are you running?

Hi!

I tried following the gentoo-wiki howto 3 times, but theres just an error, while emerging x11-libs/libX11(-1.0.0-r2). Its just the same error, Hellfire7 had (i think on page 34/35 of Part 1), but i couldn't find a solution. I think this package is needed for emerging xorg7.

The error is

Code: Select all

Saftpackl: what did you emerge ? did you look for that missing file ? that file is installed by xproto... emerge it if not yet done.

Well why don't you redirect your output into a file, emerge libX11 >> ~/emergeerror.txt and check for the first errors. The ones you got there look like keyboard to me. Try reemerging x11-proto/inputproto.

I am running modular X on a Via Epia SP 13000 (which has a CN400), using the openchrome drivers (http://www.openchrome.org/). I am using the code from their subversion repository, and DRI is working. What drivers are you running?
i now have it working with modular X and the unichrome drivers and x11-drm thanks to the guy's at this thread.

I emerged x11-proto/inputproto, but the errors are still the same. When i emerge libX11 and i want to output the errors to a file, there are just the "good" things of the emerge, and no errors, they are missing in my output file?!

Ive put my errors on this page: http://rafb.net/paste/results/eGxlcb65.html
Normally I find solutions after a little bit of googling, but this error seems to be rare :)
