Well you need to activate OGL in WoW and it will work fine but I can tell you right now the speed difference between OGL and D3D is not that great in Cedega I get 75+ FPS why need more switch it to OGL? Besides blizzard advises against OGL cause its buggy on the windows client right now. But yes it does work I have done it and its ok.
ConVicTioN wrote:I have found -opengl is faster by about 5 fps, but errors out on entering a dungen. Transgaming forums say its the new curser. I have noticed that when exiting the game it freezes and I have to restart X.
Note above that I said that blizzard told me personally that the OGL mode in Windows Client is buggy.

BTW if you want to contact me ingame I am Electrafried on Beta Server 2 and Test 10. I play the horde heh. Tauren rock I love the idea of a Giant Upright walking Bovine!
how do i activate OGL in wow?

SlicerDicer, I must say that your post was possibly the most irritating thing I've read all day. My directions were flawless. Following them exactly WILL get it working. Sure, you can tweak it, and move stuff around, but it's the same thing in the end.

In terms of flaming, I think you are the only one here who has succeeded in flaming anyone. I don't appreciate that kind of response to a tutorial that I spent quite a bit of time on with no personal gain whatsoever. If you don't think that there is merit in it, then go find somewhere else to post your crap. So far, I've listed steps that people can take to get a tricky piece of software working in this thread. You've contributed essentially nothing except:
1) Telling people to "go grab cosmos", something which actually breaks the game as of right now
2) Stating the fact that you "love the idea of a Giant Upright walking Bovine"

Well done.

You've accused me of flaming cedega, which makes me think that you are blind. Yes, I did say that cedega failed to install in my first post. However I also stated later on that it is instrumental to getting the game to work. I'm not sure I follow your reasoning as to how that constitutes flaming, so I invite you to explain it to me at your leisure. As for pirating it myself, clearly you aren't aware of recent news. You can obtain a free demo version of cedega from the developer's web site. Perhaps I'm using that?

In summary, I don't appreciate your unnecessary bashing of my attempt to help people.

Back on topic, don't use cosmos any more for now. With the current version, you will have difficulty playing the game to its full potential if you use cosmos. Wait a few days for a new build.

Other news pertaining to the new patch:
Patching should run fairly well with regular wine (I didn't test it with cedega because I didn't feel like uninstalling). It is necessary to manually open the patch downloader, but everything should be automatic from there.

If your cursor disappears completely when using the directx version, you'll need to either switch to the opengl mode (tested, runs a bit slowly...will post back with solutions tomorrow) or try toggling the "Hardware Cursor" option in the directx version of the game (untested, hard to actually click it due to the fact that I can't see the cursor :?)
There is no substitute for experience.
Imperfection indicates a lack of effort.

Whats up with Cosmos? Have been playing the Beta on my windows partition and always use Cosmos - what am I missing by using it?

(This is a genuine question)

Only just noticed this thread tho, will be awesome if I can get WoW working under linux (never tried gaming under linux before) - I hate having to reboot into windows. Am happy to subscribe to Cedega if it does the job - is it all easy enough to get working?

Kronenbourg:
With the latest patch, I was having some issues running WoW, namely that the chat was screwed up and pretty much unusable. If it's running fine for you with the latest patch, then let me know which version of cosmos you're using so I can get it too!

Using the Alpha SVN build, version r1444 I believe

Right, have got opengl running on my system now, have installed the trial version of Cedega, copied across the WoW installation from my windows machine (I have no idea if this is what I am meant to do but couldnt find any instructions on their site) and have installed it to Point2Play. In the 'Config' options I have chosen the Desktop: 1280x1024 option as I run 2 screens in 1600x1200 through twinview (so effectively 3200x1200 resolution). When I load up WoW it goes straight into full screen mode and all I can see is the top right hand quater of the WoW login screen, the rest of the screen is black. If I do a debug through cedega I can see the folllowing:

Code: Select all

0002:fixme:netbios:Netbios NCBRESET adapter 0
0002:fixme:netbios:Netbios NCBRESET adapter 1
0002:trace:bitmap:CreateBitmap 1x1, 2 colors returning 00000048
0002:trace:x11drv:setup_opengl_visual client GLX 1.3 detected
0002:trace:x11drv:setup_opengl_visual chose visual 0x23
0002:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_XF86VM_Init usexvidmode: True
0002:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_XF86VM_Init XVidMode modes: count=2
0002:trace:x11drv:convert_modeinfo  width=3200, height=1200, refresh=60
0002:trace:x11drv:convert_modeinfo  width=1600, height=600, refresh=60
0002:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_XF86VM_Init Enabling XVidMode
0002:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_GLX_Init GLX extension detected and enabled
So I can see it is trying to something wierd. Other than setting the Desktop setting in the config that blatently doesnt seem to work, any other suggestions?[/code]

Kronenbourg: Do you have DGA set to Y in your cedega config file? If not, then check to see if your game resolution is set to 1280x1024.

chiatello: Check to see if your dri is working. Run 'glxinfo' in a console.

Where abouts is the cedega config file?

I am fairly sure that WoW was set to run at 1280x1024.

Well my ogl runs fine. Sounds like you have a broken link. Every time it crashes/slowsdown is when I try to go into any building. D3D runs slower by about 10-20 fps depending where I am with no cursor. I play in ogl for cursor when done with quests I log out alt ^C client term since it crashs X on exit. Then log on with D3D complete quests bitching about the cursor the whole time reque new quests then back to ogl switch. Cosmos runs fine on my client just needs to be updated. This is furustrating to say the least. Most of the Time I am questing so its only teeth pulling in town playing guess the cursor. :wink: Cedega is good about updates every month so I hope for a fix soon. I will be very pleased if they have a fix before the release. :P Here is a howto http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wfs ... ticleid=45 for cedega. The config file is ~/.transgaming/config. You need to tweek winex or cedega to get optimal performace.
I think there for I am?

Look at your config file for cedega its in your .transgaming or Transgaming_Drive folder in your home dir ~ its called config.

Code: Select all

 nano -w .transgaming/config
Look for the part that has x11drx. It has the switch Darckness talked about DGA
Kronenbourg: Do you have DGA set to Y in your cedega config file? If not, then check to see if your game resolution is set to 1280x1024.

Code: Select all

 [x11drv]
; Number of colors to allocate from the system palette
"AllocSystemColors" = "100"
; Number of colors to copy from the default palette
"CopyDefaultColors" = "0"
; Use a private color map
"PrivateColorMap" = "N"
; Favor correctness over speed in some graphics operations
"PerfectGraphics" = "N"
; Color depth to use on multi-depth screens
;;"ScreenDepth" = "16"
; Name of X11 display to use
;;"Display" = ":0.0"
; Allow the window manager to manage created windows
"Managed" = "Y"
; Use a desktop window of the given size
;"Desktop" = "800x600"
; Use XFree86 DGA extension if present
; (make sure /dev/mem is accessible by you !)
"UseDGA" = "N"
; Use XShm extension if present
"UseXShm" = "Y"
; Enable DirectX mouse grab
"DXGrab" = "Y"
; Use XVidMode extension if present
"UseXVidMode" = "Y"
; Use XRandR extension if present
"UseXRandR" = "N"
; Create the desktop window with a double-buffered visual
; (useful to play OpenGL games)
"DesktopDoubleBuffered" = "Y"
; Code page used for captions in managed mode
; 0 means default ANSI code page (CP_ACP == 0)
"TextCP" = "0"
; Use this if you have more than one port for video on your setup
; (Wine uses for now the first 'input image' it finds).
;; "XVideoPort" = "43"
; Use this to make your X server execute all commands
; sequentially rather than buffering commands. Will make
; everything really SLOW but can be nice for debugging.
;; "Synchronous" = "Y"
; Enable memory statistics on the TransGaming HUD (must have ShowFPS activated)
;; "ShowMem" = "Y"
; How much Video RAM does your card have?
"VideoRam" = "256"
; How much AGP memory should be used for vertex data (about 1/2 your AGP aperature size)
"AGPVertexRam" = "16"
; Use NV_VAR (enabled by default)

Try running it in windowed mode; that fixed it for me. I'm taking a break from it now while I screw with wine. Hopefully I'll get that fixed in a day or two.

then I'll have to install windows:(

anyway cedega 4.1.1 is out (http://downloads.transgaming.com/files/ ... enotes.txt)

too bad:
World of Warcraft
-----------------

* The World of Warcraft installer is not currently supported in Cedega.
However, if you place a copy of riched20.dll into the c:\windows\system32\
folder, you will be able to install.
* The beta version of this game has been tested up to the open beta client
of Nov 8th 2004. As this title is still in beta, future changes may break
Cedega compatibility.
* With the introduction of the Nov 8th 2004 patch some users may a not have
a cursor.

Have you tried the cursor in the new version? Its funny they give the ad-hoc solution that we already knew would work for the install. Wonder if they got it from our forum. I have not seen this solution any where else. Do we have a lurker from transgaming on gentoo forums ;). Any one that runs nix knows that gentoo is the best and only debian comes close. I wonder if the ogl crash(building zones) is a cedega bug or a wow bug.

Fix for the ogl crash bug is to click off your mini map before entering a building. :lol:

One thing that worked for me. Once you get in the game go to video options and uncheck the hardware cursor option then boot without -opengl. You get a cursor and you can go indoors.

Also, for the software cursor to work you need to run in windowed mode.

Ok, I got a chance to play around a bunch last night and what fixed it for me was:
  1. Turning off hardware cursor in the video options
  2. Using -opengl
  3. Turning off the mini map
As long as the mini map is off I can use the cursor and have no problems with being indoors. If the mini map is on I'll crash as soon as I walk inside. I don't use windowed mode in WoW though I do run windowed mode in Cedega (though I'm not sure if it makes a difference). I get pretty decent performance so far, enough to justify buying the game when retail hits.

EDIT: Also, if you are making an undead character they start indoors so you might want to start the game out without -opengl, get in game, turn off mini map, then restart with -opengl.

Does anybody of you happen to know if there are anymore Beta Keys available to get somewhere?

I would like to try it under linux to see if it works good. I'm an unlucky guy with a ATI 9800 card which isn't very well supported under cedega/winex...

But hey, I was able to play Warcraft III once, so maybe there's hope!
