This was an rsync-only error; there are certainly other errors which can occur with git only. You can never be completely safe of any mistake somebody might make.

Are there any downsides?

Main downside is a much larger disk space requirement, especially compared to e.g. squashfs.

Does it support portage news? Last time I heard it didn't.

Never tried, but I don't see why it shouldn't. Timestamps should not play a role here AFAIK.

You have to remove (or rename) the subdirectory $DISTDIR/.git manually once so that portage will sync again.

I started removing all .git directories form /usr/portage it is now back to normal.
