No idea what's happening to gentoo-wiki/portage, and so I'll make a guess:
Someone tripped on his network cord and ripped it out of the jack. It should be back up in a few days, unless there's actual damage to the NIC.

Guessing is fun:
Someone was running with big pot of coffee, tripped and spilled it all over one of the racks causing a huge electrical fire.

The Prescott at least throttled down whenever the fan died, instead of creating another big bang.*

I heard that the poor soul who tripped managed to catch his hair on fire during this whole affair. The bad news is that he's out of hair and is unlikely to grow any more. The good news is that from henceforth, his co-workers will refer to him as the Human Torch.

here's the deal: that stuff doesn't work if it gets too hot too quickly.
Quad prescott, all the heatsinks fell off.

people who tried it reported that it works when the heatsink does not sit correctly. Asrock support told me the same.

I had an Asus a7n8x & afaik my cpu (a thoroughbred b 2600+) overheated & it wouldn't boot anymore
(the cpu fan didn't spin & therefore the overheating)
