You should paste your ~/.torsmorc file so these wonderful people can take a look at it.

On the note of my weirdo lm_sensors readings, I found custom sensor.conf files on Tyan's site for their motherboards. All better now!

Your config works for me just fine 8O Are you maybe missing whatever fonts it's attempting to use??? Maybe run xfontsel and pick one and put it in there to see if that's the problem?

heres a hint:

in your ~/.xinitrc, put this:

Code: Select all

torsmo
exec fluxbox
make sure in your .torsmorc to say it should fork to background.

that way, fluxbox cannot mess with you.

i had it running with flux fine, both the cvs and the stable.

i have mine working.. but here is the question, are you using apm or aspci (is that right?)
i use apm, and it works....

as a solution, if you use apm (and this can be probably be used with the other one too..)

is a script like this:

Code: Select all

awk '{print $7}' /proc/apm
you can also derive the other stuff from the file, if you want....

I'm having problems with the fonts in torsmo. I've tried various fonts and they look horrible.

Here's the font part my config:

are the fonts huge and ugly? i think you are writing them in an unnecesary fashion (all the *'s arent necesary)

try:

Code: Select all

font lime-7
actually, looking back at it, you will get prettier fonts using xft fonts...
make sure you install the cvs version (check out the guide i posted on page 4...) and then use whatever xft font you want... for example (this is what i use):

Code: Select all

xftfont snap-6
looks a whole lot better... heres a screenshot to give you an idea:

I used torsmo for a while, but then went back to gkrellm.
The reason I went back is because i got tired of torsmo flickering everytime it refreshed.

Is this standard?

I am using fluxbox on Xfree.

this is due to the method in which it redraws itself. it erases the old one, and then draws a new one. the flicker is the time it is taking to draw the new one. if you have a fast computer, or your computer is not heavily loaded, you will probably not notice, or barely notice the refreshes. if you have an old computer, or one which is heavily loaded (i notice this when compiling) the flicker is really bad.

what the developers need to do (i would look into it if i had the time, but i dont) is implement double buffering. as in, the refresh is drawn to memory, and then when it is fully drawn, the old one is erased and the new one put on, instantly....

what are the specs on your machine (probably why it flickers).. i have an 800mhz g3 ibook (ppc) w/ 640 ram, and it barely ever flickers.. only when the cpu is heavily loaded down.... i mean, if i pay attention to it, then i notice it more often, but usually i dont....

Mine disappears completely for several seconds, sometimes long enough that I think I won't see it again. My computer is an Intel 2.8Ghz, on an Abit IS-7 865 board. 1 gig ram. Running mostly KDE and usually only have browser/email and couple of consoles running, when I'm not doing some kind of work that I would expect possible system slowdowns.

I've quit using torsmo for this reason. I may have something borked in my system. Torsmo never showed any swap useage, even though I double checked fstab and starting swap. But maybe that's normal for what I was doing? Can't remember if I ever had any large Gimp sessions going or whatever with torsmo running.

/hunky

[EDIT - 11/12/04] Actually, what happens with my setup is I see torsmo barely flicker once in a while as it redraws.. sometimes the graphs change without noticeable flicker. But every once in awhile it completely disappears for several seconds. I can get used to that, but weird. [/EDIT]

I can't get torsmo to build from cvs, no matter what I do... It borks out on me at exactly the same point each time (and has been doing for the last few days):

Code: Select all

updating cache ./config.cache
creating ./config.status
creating Makefile
creating config.h
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -Wall -I/usr/X11R6/include -I/usr/X11R6/include -I/usr/include/freetype2 -I/usr/include/freetype2/config -I/usr/X11R6/include -Wall -W -c common.c

I left it a while and tried again, because I thought it might have been an issue with bad code checked into cvs, but its still happening, whether I build manually or using the torsmo-cvs ebuild posted earlier in this thread. Anyone have any idea why this still refuses to work for me? The only reason I want it is the xft fonts, and thats the only reason it fails :D

EDIT: oh, and this happens if I use gcc 3.3.3, 3.4.2, or 3.4.3

Edited the ebuild to include this fix:

Code: Select all

    sed -e 's/CONF(xftfont)/CONF("xftfont")/' -i torsmo.c
It should compile fine with xft now.

Excellent, thanks :) I really should have had a look at the code myself, I'm sure I would have spotted that...

Athlon 700mhz with 1gig of ram and it flickered every 3 seconds.
Nvidia 32 meg tnt2 video card using nv driver so I can run multiple instances of X for when I let my 2 year old son play on the box.

currently I have no swap usage, and only 151M of Ram being used.
whats currently running: apache, mysql, 1 instance of X, fluxbox, thunderbird, firebird, a couple eterm, fluxter, gkrellm, torsmo (just for this test)
processor load: < 3%
apache, mysql setup is for personal use, hence the only visitor I get is me. :) no load there.

I do know that I can't watch dvd's because it is to jumpy, so maybe it is related. I have to boot into windows to watch dvds. :(

I don't know if any of that helps but if anyone has a clue let me know

J

You can use the nvidia driver and still run multiple instances of X. Works fine. I run games in their own seperate X server using 66.29.

This is probably a stupid question, or perhaps I'm too tired (or both  ), but where is the default torsmo configuration file?

I cannot find ~/.torsmorc anywhere in my system, however torsmo loads up and it does have a particular (and very agreeable :) ) configuration. Where does it read that from?

Before I copy the /usr/share/doc/torsmo-0.17/torsmorc.sample.gz to my home directory I would like to see what the original looks like . . . :?
Regards,
Mick
