That has to be the most frustrating game, but I got my entertainment out of it by cheating... really bad... and I mean *really* bad (think of the possibilities with a hot key that will uncurse everything plus heal you, _and_ having a wand of wishing with 32767 charges?)

Haha tempting, isn't it? Don't you want to see how well you can do without cheating?

Well... when I ascended without cheating, I was already very spoiled.

The usual advice in your case would be "play a valkyrie" and "use your pet."

Your pet is good for many things. It is smarter than you, it is stronger than you, and it loves to bring you items. Oh, and it isn't lawful... so no risk of punishment.

Your god is also good for you, if you don't get on his nerves. Starving? No problem. Want something? Bring something!

Shops are pretty central, ever noticed that certain items come at certain prices?

Another central point is to just not do stupid things. Don't have a lamp? Don't run around in the dark then. Not well-prepared in general? Don't touch that then.

Still another central point is, learn to toss things. Pointy things are best.

Finally, dwarves and watchmen are well-equipped, but too strong for you. Remember your pet - it's not only stronger, but also smarter.

If you combine those things, you should be more successful. Learn to accept defeat, and learn to learn from defeat.
