i was following the gentoo docs for setting up squirrelmail and ran into a snag. First, postfix then imap was installed. Then, i began the squirrelmail install, but when its time to go to the squirrelmail folder in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/squirrelmail and run it gives me an error that says
| Code: | | -bash ./configure: Permission denied |
Has anyone ever ran into this problem and know how to fix it. Also, im running 2.4.24 kernel on an Ultra 5. |

what user do you try to run this as and what are the permissions on the file?

The doc says to run ./conf.pl. Is what you posted above a typo or is that what you were actually trying to do?
Between looking at the docs and a squirrelmail install, looks like there are two problems;
1) the directory to cd to is /var/www/localhost/htdocs/mail/config
2) the conf.pl script doesn't have the executable bit set
so you can either do the following to fix that;
set the executable bit on the file
or prefix the command with perl

i was following the Gentoo Linux Desktop Configuration Guide. It states to:
| Code: | # emerge squirrelmail
# cd /var/www/localhost/htdocs
# cd squirrelmail
# ./configure |
i did read the configure script to see where it was leading, but when i tried to run the conf.pl file by itself, it said that i did not have permission. so, like shakti said, i changed the permission and had no problems after that. |

it seems the instructions differ between the desktop guide and the virtual mailhosting system guide.
Desktop guide 8.14:

Mailhost Guide:
| Code: | # ln -s /var/www/localhost/htdocs/squirrelmail/ /var/www/localhost/htdocs/mail
# cd /var/www/localhost/htdocs/mail/conf
# ./conf.pl |
