I am copying a file from my Gentoo box to a Windows Server 2003 machine... Everything seems to go fine until (I think) the first file is done and the second is about to start. It freezes there. Samba seems to be dead in the water at this point. I can't cancel, or close the window. Any thoughts? I'm running Samba 3.0.2a...

Edit:
I tried to stop and then start the service, but when I tried the stopping part, it wasn't running. So I started it. Still nothing is happening with those files being copied.

Are you using smbclient or smbfs or cifsfs?

This could be important. The image you have doesn't seem to load.

Try
Code:
smbclient //win2003server/share -U username
and see if you can "put" two files. smbclient is kinda like ftp for Samba.

I'm going through the menu... Applications | Network Servers then browsing to the server and share that I want to copy the files to. So I'm not sure what that would be considered.

I can certainly try the command line.

Weird that the link works for me... I will host it elsewhere and update the link.

O.k.

My guess is that if you use smbclient, (be sure to emerge samba-3.0.2a!) it'll work.

Microsoft put a lot of stuff into 2003 that broke Samba, so other things may be outdated. Schannel and stuff like that. :)

smbclient worked without problem.

But that kind of defeat the purposes of being able to use it through drag and drop and whatnot.

O.K. Then you need to find out exactly what runs when you use the other method.

Start copying a file, and then do a
Code:
 ps auwx
and try to figure out which one it is. Then we can find why it breaks.

:)

Well, unfortunately I can't browse anymore, and the copy status window is still sitting there (can't get rid of it). Although I'm sure a reboot will fix it. Not sure if a log out will fix things though... So reboot it is.

I've got this:

rth 3560 0.1 1.4 17000 7584 ? S 01:47 0:00 /usr/libexec/nautilus-throbber --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:Nautilus_Thr

rth 3523 2.7 3.4 27292 17696 ? S 01:46 0:03 nautilus --sm-config-prefix /nautilus-C0zkGG/ --sm-client-id 117f0000

I tried to copy only one file this time, and as I assumed, it stops at the end. The list is sorted by time and there isn't anything else that shows up at the end... Before is -bash and after is ps auwx (the first of the two shown above).

Edit:
By doing a kill of the following PID:

rth 3584 0.0 3.4 27416 17840 ? S 01:54 0:00 nautilus --sm-config-prefix /nautilus-C0zkGG/ --sm-client-id 117f0000

The copy transfer status window was killed. So I guess it's a Nautilus issue, not a Samba issue.

O.K. Go to https://bugs.gentoo.org and search for "ALL Nautilus" and see if there is already a bug like that one open.

If not, open one! :)

Nothing in Bugzilla for this that I can find. Although I wonder if it's a configuration problem and not a bug. Being new to Linux and all...
