This is my adventures(more like pains) of converting from 2.4 kernels to the 2.6 kernels. I have included my kernel config and also my X86Config file at least the most important parts anyway. It at least worked in my situation on 2 different computers. The computer that I will post is a 2600 amd athlon w/512 ram,via-rhine network card, 8x agp nvidia 440mx 64meg video card and various other stuff that is not really relevant to converting at least that I know of. So here is my kernel-2.6 config file.
If you dont have a Athlon-XP make sure you change the cpu options in here and you may want to get rid of some of the options. The most important with nvidia kernels seem to be not including dri in the kernel and not compiling the agpgart modules. I did include the agpgart module itself but none of the others. Also to shave the size of the kernel many of the options I just included for the heck of it.

Make sure you mount your boot device first then build the kernel and after the kernel is finished it seemed to help that I used 'modules-update' after.
I hope this helps someone else out cause it took me a couple of days to figure this all out...what a pain. It appears to be running fine for me.
I've followed your lead and moved to udev. I am very impressed. I have two scsi-emulated USB devices that get assigned /dev/sd[ab]1 depending on the order I plug them in. With udev, they are correctly identified and symlinked as /dev/camera1 and /dev/iriver1. Fantastic!
udev has some neat features but its not ready for prime time quite yet. Anything it doesn't recognize, (Usb Printer) doesnt get a name, unlike devfs which will just give it /dev/usb/lp0 and /dev/usblp0

Indeed, that's what udev.rules is for. That's the main point of udev - it gives you complete control over how your devices are named. For example, here's how I handle my digital camera to make it appear as /dev/camera1 (as well as /dev/sd[ab]1):
Pretty straightforward really. If you want your printers to come up as /dev/epson1 or whatever, just write a rule for it. I imagine the next logical step for udev is to be integrated with some sort of 'first-time' program, that will allow you to set up rules via a pretty GUI or something when you first plug a device in, but you can already do this yourself with the /sys filesystem and udevinfo.
