GAIM is nice, but I prefer centericq. The MSN support has been re-merged with the CVS - I'm eagerly anticipating the next release when I will be able to use it for MSN as well.
You might also be interested in bitlebee, which is an IRC-to-IM gateway, and quite an impressive project.
I would also be lying if I said I was that impressed by a GAIM developers attempt at trolling on bugzilla a while ago too, which has to be a bit of a factor.
I use gaim but im really getting tired of it  i get disconnected from everything at least a couple of times everyday!
then it starts complaning about write error or something ...
using sim for icq (somehow prefer it over kopete for icq but i cannot really define why) to communicate with my GF. but i am currently trying to convert her to jabber. should not be too difficult as she is using linux as primary os (mandrake, but probably switching to debian)
But the best thing about being an older goth? The fact that no one tries to tell you "It's a phase!" anymore.

I use PSI with jabber. Great for offices intranets and totally secure for people connecting from the outside. Plus if you run your own servers then no one receives any spam either.
Kopete works well here. A few I have used in the past are:
CenterICQ
TKAbber
Gaim
PSI
aMSN
My favorite so far is Kopete, but the only reason I use it instead of Gaim is that it uses QT and I like QT better than GTK (don't know why, though). I hear CenterICQ will be getting MSN support again in an upcomming release. It is a decent console based client. I only used it for about 10 seconds a couple installs ago, though. TKAbber is a quick emerge and great for when you are installing or upgrading KDE/Gnome. I am glad I had the pleasure of using Gaim once. Very nice and very polished. PSI is a good Jabber client, but it has been a while since I used it last. aMSN is ok, but I personally do not like the "official" msn interface and therefore do not like the aMSN interface.

AMSN is almost a perfect look-alike for the real MSN messenger.

The way you feel about organized religion is the same way I feel about organized socialism.
Gossip is an excellent, easy to use messenger for GNOME. It's currently centered on the Jabber protocol, but this is changing to expand to all protocols, and the client is not being designed specifically around Jabber anymore.
I should mention I made the app and presence icons for the latest releases
For anyone using KDE3.2 I recommend they check out Kopete, I used Gaim for ages since Kopete was easily the buggiest piece of linux software I've ever used, I reckon Kopete probably delayed KDE3.2 on it's own!
But still, since KDE3.2 (when it was intergrated into KDE) it has appeared stable for me so I would recommend Kopete to someone on the look out for a new IM that doesn't clone the native windows IM clients.
I went off Gaim as I think it didn't support file transfers for all protocols (either msn/icq one of them anyway). Though it has a lovely interface as does Kopete
If you're an IRC user try bitlbee, it really easy to use with low resource demands, supports aim, msn, jabber etc..
I just started using it myself a few days ago, and have been very impressed, you don't even need to emerge anything new, gotta love those virtual IRC channels
