DNSmasq failed update

  • Quote

Post by RayOfLight » Sun May 17, 2026 4:17 pm

DNSmasq borked once again

This time, it got updated from 2.91 to 2.92rel2 waited until reboot to destroy all my network connectivity.

After a lot of downtime, it seems that it doesn't care for my /etc/dnsmasq.d/file.conf and relies on a newly generated /etc/dnsmasq.conf file,

You may rename, or delete that file, it will never again check its conf directory that worked for so many years.

Had to mv file.conf to ../dnsmasq.conf to satisfy this absurdity.

Another crisis solved and this post is for posteriority.

Who releases such mediocre code?

Perhaps you used to have a --conf-dir parameter in /etc/init.d/dnsmasq*, and not any more?
AFAIK /etc/dnsmasq.conf is the default, and --conf-dir=/etc/dnsmasq.d/*.conf needs user configuration.

Note that I don't actually use dnsmasq on Gentoo, but I used to on Arch, so I might be misleading you here.

The ebuild between 2.91 and 2.92 only changed to add verify-sig support, nothing else, and I don't think there were any related upstream changes to the issue you describe.

My guess is something similar to what Goverp says, along with perhaps running dispatch-conf/etc-update and some edits you had being lost?
