[SOLVED] Hyprland causes a strange lag to the foot terminal

  • Quote

Post by Naix » Thu May 29, 2025 5:46 pm

I've encounter a very strange delay with Hyprland and terminal emulators, and I'm hoping to seek some guidance as I'm all out of ideas.
wherever I open foot, a wayland terminal emulator, I notice a very strange input delay when I start typing any commands
For example when I type "whoami", the terminal would display "whoam" and then pause for a half second before adding on the "i" if I type very fast.
The symptoms seems to happens sporadically and randomly but is very noticeable.
I should note that this seems to happen in terminal emulators only and I can replicate it with "weston-terminal", other tools are not effected such as "sublime text", I also noticed that this problem doesn't manifest on weston.

The following is my Hyprland config

Code: Select all

# You can split this configuration into multiple files
# Create your files separately and then link them to this file like this:
# source = ~/.config/hypr/myColors.conf

I've also had issues with input lag when using Linux distributions inside VMware.

Problem here is that they don't happen on X11 or Weston wayland so I can't really blame it on VMware, Doesn't happen on sublime text 3 either launched in Hyprland.

So I got around to playing more with and I started to attempt to replicate the issue on other distros I selected Arch and with the same control variables as my gentoo install. The terminal random input delay did not occur on Arch, So I took a step back, that's when I realized arch has the version of 0.49.0-1, however Gentoo's Hyprland stable is still on 0.46.2-r1. So with this information I decided to install version 0.49.0 unstable, and just like that the bug was gone.

TLDR: If you are a VMware Guest VM upgrade to v0.49.0 unstable (At the time of writing this)
I should also mention you should also allocate at least 512MB of Graphics Memory to the VM, VMware's default 256MB Will not cut it.
