[SOLVED] gentoo-sources 5.15.11 is stable not LTS

  • Quote

Post by larrys » Tue Dec 28, 2021 2:09 am

I accepted an upgrade of sys-kernel/gentoo-sources. I did make oldconfig, and used genkernel to build and deploy. Everything works fine. Today I decided to look on kernel.org, because I was curious when 5.15 became longterm stable. But then it said it's not: it's stable, and 5.10.88 is latest longterm stable. This seemed like a change to me. I'm used to gentoo-sources tracking longterm stable. I checked the Kernel wiki for gentoo-sources and it says:

Code: Select all

gentoo-sources

When manually compiling kernel sources, or using genkernel to automate some of the process, Gentoo recommends the sys-kernel/gentoo-sources package for most users. Its stable versions follow the long term stable (LTS) kernels from upstream kernel.org.
I checked then news and the gentoo kernel forum for info but I did not see anything.

Can someone please explain the reason for the switch from longterm stable to stable for gentoo-sources? This seems unusual. By the way, I think I'm configured for the stable version of gentoo-sources.

Code: Select all

$ emerge -1pv sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

https://www.kernel.org/category/releases.html Shows that 5.15 is an LTS kernel, but just happens to not be marked on the main kernel.org page just yet. This will happen eventually.

You are welcome to mask new versions until you feel comfortable or else emerge a specific slot so it is retained and won't be prompted in updates.

Thank you, for your reply. That explains it.

I do install the specific kernel version in @world using the
emerge --noreplace
command. Fortunately have not needed to fall back yet. No, I'm fine with using 5.15.11 as long as it's the stable version of gentoo-sources.[/code]
