Yahoo Compatible Meeting Software

  • Quote

Post by grj » Fri Jan 09, 2004 3:45 am

My mother-in-law has a webcam running on windows through yahoo. She wants to be able to do video chat/conferencing with her grandchildren. Is there any way to do this with linux through yahoo?
Hope this helps!

Currently there isn't any way to view or broadcast webcams through yahoo on linux (unfortunatly :( )

GAIM is a nice IM client that can do just about all of the yahoo stuff, except for IMvironments and webcam.

Yahoo has been mucking with their login protocol so GAIM has been having issues logging in to yahoo Hopefully that gets straightened out soon.

EDIT: Please prove me wrong. ;)

I don't think you can do this via Yahoo but there is Gnomemeeting,
http://www.gnomemeeting.org/
which allows you to use a webcam and communicate with MS netmeeting users. I think netmeeting comes standard with windows so all windows users should have it.

well... there is a patch in the sourceforge gaim project page that allows you to view yahoo webcams. i with somebody could put that in an ebuild... [hint hint]

net-im/ayttm does Yahoo video and worked until the protocol change last week or so. Their CVS version works now according to their developers.

i checked out ayttm and from what i could see it only offered support to view webcams... maybe i just didnt find the right option or something... ?

gyach-enchanced is one i'm in the process of checking out now... it apparently includes support for both viewing and broadcasting the webcam. It only does Yahoo from what i can tell... but thats all i'm interested in at the moment.

http://phpaint.sourceforge.net/pyvoicec ... yache.html

its a fork of gyach
there is no ebuild for it currently unless its still in devel. on bugs.gentoo.org (hevent looked yet)... I am in the exact same position as the original poster of this topic... except the grandparents of my 4 month old daughter are in Japan using Japanese yahoo. 8O

if i cant get this working the wife is gonna make me install WinXP :x

any update on this topic? i live in Washington state, my girlfriend in Colorado. The only way we get to see each other is through video chat. her proprietary real estate programs won't allow her to run linux. my hatred of redmond (it's even NEXT DOOR to me and i hate it) won't let me run windows. i do keep a w2k install on a second 2GB hd just to dual boot into MSN chat for video. she'll install anything that runs on w2k/xp, i'll install anything that runs on linux. please tell me there's a solution?

well if it doesnt have to be Yahoo then you guys should use Netmeeting (on the windows side) and GnomeMeeting (on the linux side)... they both use H323 protocol and should video/audio conference just fine. i just installed the new 1.0 version of GnomeMeeting (which is masked) but it looks nice. Even has new features for NAT traversal (the H323 protocol is a notorious bitch to get across NAT's and firewalls). If she's running XP tell her to goto start, run, and type "conf" and hit enter... after thinking for a good 30 secs. it will launch the netmeeting config wizard. With XP MS wants you to use MSN instead of netmeeting so they removed the shortcuts to it but its still there. I think the shortcuts are in win2k though.

Net Meeting <-> Gnome Meeting works quite good if you have a fast connection.
Gnomemeeting couldn't include all audio codecs used by Net Meeting because of it's licenses.
If both use gnomemeeting then you can achieve lower bitrates with the same quality.

Right now there is no other solution for it. In terms of usabilty and matureness Gnomemeeting is superior. They state they are the best VoIP solution for linux, I think it would be the best in windows too if it wouldbe available ;)

ok, so here's the hitch i'm hitting - the Windows Directory Server that NetMeeting tries to use (the only server on the list) is no longer active - now it just tells you to use MSN Messenger... How do I go about finding/calling/connecting from the one computer to the other thru NetMeeting/GnomeMeeting?
If you can't tell, I've never used NetMeeting.
thanks both! "conf" was exactly the command that worked under her XP install :D

EDIT - looks like ils.seconix.com is the directory GM speicifies to use, but I can't get netmeeting to successfully register there?

Is any one if you two firewalled?
The easiest way would be to just enter the IP address of the other.
So both need to have their net meeting open and one calls the other.
This can be a little annoying though because you always have to tell the other your IP address.
Another option would be that you use some dyndns service and then your girlfriend just has to enter that address.

i have an ipcop linux gateway box that's plugged btwn my cable modem and the local hub for my house. it's on DHCP thru the cable modem, and serves a 192.168.. network for the computers on the hub, so she wouldn't be able to call my ip directly (thank you ipcop) but could i call her through the gateway?

and you're saying that i don't have to be registered on a directory if i have her ipconfig and tell me her ipaddress? i chat to her via gaim, so i can get her to do that no problem.

and i don't know if she's firewalled, but we share video thru msn messenger right now (stupid w2k install on 2g hd as my dual-boot, used only for msn video chat with her), so if she does have a firewall, it allows direct conneciton.

If you are using gnomemeeting it has a nice option that supports NAT firewalls which you should try.
I did today and it worked like a charm :)
So if you have her IP just tell her to open net meeting and wait for your call.
All you do then is enter her IP in gnomemeeting and call her and then it will ring on her side and she just has to accept it.
That's it.
