|
|
Having an odd problem with AMD Palamino install. After initial Gentoo boot screen (with default "gentoo" as well as "gentoo -nofb" attempted to no avail), the system begins loading initd2...... and the loses its video with a "VGA mode not support" displayed on the monitor by the monitor.
Problem shows up in both AMD Athelon XP and x86 LiveCDs. System is an AMD Palamino 1.9 GHz, Biostar M7SUA motherboard, 256 MB DDR, on-board video (SiS Real Graphics).
Have looked to see if there is an option to bypass the vga formatting (and thought the x86 livecd didn't use this formatting) but I must be missing the parameters in the install handbook. Haven't seen this on a dozen Pentium4 installs as well as some older P3/P2 systems, though an old 486 has a similar immediate video mess. Slackware install CDs come up fine on both.
Any boot parameter to bypass the fancy install VGA? Thanks....

I'm wondering if this might be a problem with the video mode Gentoo LiveCD is seeking, vs. the SiS chipset and LCD monitor (15" Proview) in use. This website here provides info on the SiS operation:
http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsis630.shtml
and details supported modes for LCD and CRT. It looks as if both 800x600 and 1024x768 are fully supported modes, but I'm unaware of what mode Gentoo LiveCD is going into to provide the blue "Gentoo" frame around the console text.
Also, alt-F1/alt-F2/etc. console switching doesn't solve problem either...

|

Have found a workaround... and a bug.
Problem appears to be lack of Gentoo mode for SiS chipset in LCD mode. Have tested two other SiS boards with x86 and AMD XP LiveCDs. Gentoo dies on high-res console start as it cannot find suitable mode for SiS.
Workaround is to not use LCD with Gentoo LiveCD and SiS; instead, use a standard CRT monitor and Gentoo finds the mode for SiS.
Will submit a minor bug on this.

You were close ...
The option you want is "nofb" instead of "gentoo"

Thanks cyrillic - I've got 50 of those boxes in and will pull another out and give that a try. Fighting a "gs-sources dies completely on make-modules via genkernel" problem (just gives up with no error; manual kernel build dies on some of the network adapter modules).
Rebuilding all manually on that box...
