VMWare full screen problem

  • Quote

Post by Halanegri » Mon Dec 15, 2003 4:53 am

I wanted to play a few seasons of Championship Manager 2, which is a DOS game, so I decided to try it out in VMWare(it's too slow in DosBox).

I have run this game without problems on a native Windows XP installation with VDMSound. But when I try to start the game in vmware, it goes fullscreen and I get alot of red garbage on my screen(but the game is running, I can easily alt+tab back to my desktop). VMWare does work fullscreen normally, though.

I also tried playing the game natively(without VDMSound) in Windows 98(in vmware), and had the exact same problem. This also happens when I try booting vmware in fullscreen mode, i.e. I only see red garbage until the Windows gui comes up.

I have tried fiddling with alot of settings in XF86Config but nothing works. :?

Btw, I don't think it has anything to do with the resolution because the game uses 720x400 and the vmware boot screen uses 640x480, and they both fail.

Here it is:

Code: Select all

VMWare doesn't seem to be able to switch the video mode to the same one it needs... I have had this problem a few times and unfornatly the only solution I know of is to use VMWare in windowed mode instead of fullscreen for those console apps...

Well, VMware starts fine in windowed mode, but when I try starting CM2 while VMware is in windowed mode, the vmware window changes in size(since the game has to be started full screen in Windows), and then nothing happens(gray screen). The game is however active as usual, but I can't see anything.

I was having the same problem, viz. black screen with red blobs of garbage.
Turned out this was caused by a customized vga= setting at boot. When I removed this from the boot line, vmware liked fullscreen mode again.
