Hi, this is very frustrating. I cannot emerge qt, I've tried three different versions (3.2.3, 3.2.2-r1 and 3.2.1). I get the same error message every time (which is not very helpful): `make: *** [sub-src] Error 2'. I don't know what this means and everything I searched for regarding qt not compling didn't provide a solution.

The computer I'm trying to emerge on is a Dell Celeron 500MHz with (only) 64 Megs of RAM.

I've appended the output from my latest attempt:

Code:

g++ -c -pipe -fno-exceptions -Wall -W -O2 -D_REENTRANT -fPIC -DQT_SHARED -DQT_TABLET_SUPPORT -DQT_NO_DEBUG -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DQT_BUILTIN_GIF_READER=1 -DQT_NO_STYLE_MAC -DQT_NO_STYLE_AQUA -DQT_NO_STYLE_INTERLACE -DQT_NO_STYLE_WINDOWSXP -DQT_NO_STYLE_COMPACT -I/var/tmp/portage/qt-3.2.1/work/qt-x11-free-3.2.1/mkspecs/linux-g++ -I. -I/usr/include/freetype2 -I3rdparty/opentype -I../include -I/usr/X11R6/include -I/usr/X11R6/include -I.moc/release-shared-mt/ -o .obj/release-shared-mt/qlistview.o widgets/qlistview.cpp

Really, I'm trying to install mplayer-- why does it have a qt dependancy anyway? argh! I hate qt.

This is wierd. I noticed in another thread that had a similar error message in it, someone suggested that one should turn swap off because it worked for them. So that's what I did and the build failed right away:

Code:

Creating qmake. Please wait...
g++ -c -o project.o -I. -Igenerators -Igenerators/unix -Igenerators/win32 -Igenerators/mac -I/var/tmp/portage/qt-3.2.3/work/qt-x11-free-3.2.3/include/qmake -I/var/tmp/portage/qt-3.2.3/work/qt-x11-free-3.2.3/include -I/var/tmp/portage/qt-3.2.3/work/qt-x11-free-3.2.3/include -DQT_NO_TEXTCODEC -DQT_NO_UNICODETABLES -DQT_NO_COMPONENT -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPRESS -I/var/tmp/portage/qt-3.2.3/work/qt-x11-free-3.2.3/mkspecs/linux-g++ -DHAVE_QCONFIG_CPP project.cpp
g++: Internal error: Killed (program cc1plus)
Please submit a full bug report.
See <URL:http://bugs.gentoo.org/> for instructions.
gmake: *** [project.o] Error 1
qmake failed to build. Aborting.

!!! ERROR: x11-libs/qt-3.2.3 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 112, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

Maybe these errors have something to do with swap space?

think i'll try that too then.

However, I think mine might be a nvidia related thing somehow ->

Yay! It _was_ the swap space. I used another (larger) partition for the swap space and, while it took forever, qt was successfully built! I guess 120Mb of swap space isn't enuough (I ended up using a 350Mb swap).

So I hope others having this problem will come across this posting. The summary is:

If something's not building and there's no useful error message, and there seems to be no problem with the system _at all_ then check the size of the swap space-- it might be too small.

I only wish I was better at choosing partition sizes.

Thanks a lot!!!

I was facing this problem and wondering what happened...
I was working with 200M of swap, but if you don't want problems, put 500M for sure :)
