Having problems booting with a fresh kernel build using gs-source 2.4.23_pre8, a kernel panic (slab.c:1133). Limited information on the Internet shows on Oct 23, 2003 that there is a problem with _pre8 and ACPI, and suggests reverting to 2.4.23_pre7. According to Gentoo's kernel page (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-kernel.xml), the gs-source is supposed to be stable, but the latest stable Linux kernel is 2.4.22 in that line (www.kernel.org)
So, I downloaded 2.4.22 from kernel.org and going native, so to speak.

Yes, but that brings in the security bug of kernels up to 22. So upgrade to the now stable vanilla 2.4.23.
Furthermore, I had exactly the same problem with 2.4.23_pre8. Kernel panic in slab.c with compiled in ACPI. I've made a bug report on bugs.gentoo.org since this is the supposedly stable kernel.
Best,

Okay. Odd solution, but it worked. First, I fled Gentoo for Slackware for a time, but came back. When Linus released 2.6.0 final, I figured Gentoo would catch up soon. So, I installed a pro-ACPI 2.6.0 kernel (development-sources) and emerged xfce4, quickly becoming my preferred desktop.
I didn't notice the first time the fan kicked off under ACPI, but my wife did. Perhaps too much time spent in cold rooms with big servers spent I?
So, once I can solve another issue, I'll be taking an Gentoo laptop to law school in the fall! |
