I forgot to mention I went so far as to emerge -e obexd to no avail.

Just in case, I tried emerge bluez && emerge obexd, with the same result.

hmm - what does grep SECURITY /usr/include/bluetooth/* return.
If your system is configured correctly, it should show you the wanted symbols.

which version of bluez are you using?

weird - I just gave it a spin with the same version you are using, and it builds fine.
I must admit, that I am using hardened amd64 opposed to your i686

filing a bug might help...

Thanks for your help. I seem to be alone in having this issue, I've searched high and low. I don't think it's a bug, I just pooched something...so I'll wait for a bit for an answer here before bugging the devs.

Is there a way I can totally remove my BT stack including configs?

I'm not even sure which packages to unmerge, besides the obvious obexd and bluez - are there others involved?

Code:
RDEPEND="eds? ( gnome-extra/evolution-data-server )
        !eds? ( dev-libs/libical )
        net-wireless/bluez
        >=dev-libs/openobex-1.4
        >=dev-libs/glib-2.16:2
        sys-apps/dbus
        server? ( !app-mobilephone/obex-data-server )"

DEPEND="${RDEPEND}
        dev-util/pkgconfig"

That is the dependency list from the ebuild. libical openobex or dbus might be other candidates, pkgconfig or glib are less likely - IMO.
OTOH those troublesome symbol are from bluez, therefore my bet is still with bluez, although I cannot reproduce it.

I'd look at config.log, perhaps bluez is getting detected by pkg-config, but somehow correct flags aren't passed.
With silent make, it's hard to tell.

Heres the log. I don't see an issue.
