Hi -

On occasion, after I watch a flash video on youtube in firefox, the final frame of the video (specifically the one with a replay button and a few other suggested videos) will remain "stuck" on the background of my desktop, but it is only visible through something colored totally black. For example, the black background of a terminal window or the text of a website. It is not set on the actual desktop background - just any time something should be black in the location of the old video, the final frame appears. When this happens to black text, the text just looks like parts of the font are missing (corresponding to the white parts of the video).

Any ideas what this might be? I've only seen it on one of my machines:
Intel Thinkpad T61
2.6.36-gentoo
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-260.19.26
www-plugins/adobe-flash-10.2.161.23_pre20101117
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20110106 Gentoo Firefox/3.6.13

Thanks.

There are a couple of other threads about related problems. Downgrading to adobe-flash-10.1.102.64 solved the problem for me. The latest security alerts say this version is unaffected by the security vulnerabilities that affect earlier versions.

I admit that I don't understand what you're saying here but it sounds like you are saying you are not even willing to try a solution that has worked for many others.

Changing USE flags does absolutely nothing if you don't follow the change with at least one emerge. Are you certain adobe-flash was not upgraded when you did the emerge? Currently there is some sort of nasty conflict between the closed source nvidia-drivers and the closed source adobe-flash. Even if changing a USE flag contributed to your problem (which I doubt very much since most USE flags have little effect on the closed source packages that are conflicting) it is likely that downgrading to a version of adobe-flash that doesn't have the nvidia conflict will solve your problem.

I don't think it's likely that anyone else will be able to help you with the problem because everyone else with the buggy combination of nvidia-drivers and adobe-flash will be downgrading. If you still have the problem after downgrading then we will be in a better position to help you. But even then, with closed source binary packages, there is very little we can do except what I've already done which is recommend versions in the tree that work for us.

Experienced the same problem.I thought it was caused by kde.
Downgrading to adobe-flash-10.1.102.64 solved the problem for me.

Quick way to fix it is to CTRL-ALT-F1 then CTRL-ALT-F7 (switch to console and back to X) - corruption disappears.

Mike of NVIDIA noted that the Adobe flash plugin uses black as the overlay color, likely related to this issue.

An approach, possibly similar in EFFECT to Ctrl-Alt-F1 followed by Ctrl-Alt-F7 as described by lyallp, is achieved with (modified from Jack Waterworth of RH):

1. Right click on the youtube video --> select settings
2. Disable hardware acceleration
3. may need to close the command window <--- not verified
4. reboot (or restart X) <--- may not be necessary
5. Enable hardware acceleration. <--- seems to be ok

I found step 4 not necessary and subsequent ACTIVATION of the hardware acceleration did not return the defect.

Is this an on-going fix or does it need to be repeated every time the machine is started?

Unfortunately I cannot change my settings, I right click, the little window appears but it is totally unresponsive, as though it's not there.

I should mention I am running www-plugins/adobe-flash-10.2.159.1 and x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-270.41.03
Oh, and I see the problem on 32 and 64 bit systems in Firefox 3.6.17.

Suggestions would be welcomed.

I had the same problem some time ago but it had gone for long time.
Unfortunately the problem came back with newer versions of nvidia and flash (I'm not sure which one). After system update I see flash in background of my console and on other tabs :/

Got versions:
www-plugins/adobe-flash-11.2.202.235
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-295.49

EDIT:
solution for that is setting WindowlessDisable=1 in /etc/adobe/mms.cfg
