Code: Select all

grub> root (hd0,0) (Your boot partition)
grub> setup (hd0) (Where the boot record is installed; here, it is the MBR)
(listing 23.3 of the Gentoo Linux 1.4 Installation Instructions)

I believe under the description for Documentation, Tips & Tricks it says:

Before messing with the mbr, it might be wise to backup anything important, on your first partition at least.

I recently did what I think you want to do, and lost my windows partition which was on hda1. :P

Why do you want to format the MBR anyway? Whats wrong with it?

if you have a win98 bootdisk handy you can run

Code: Select all

fdisk /mbr
from it.

If you really want to format your mbr, here is the command:

Code: Select all

 dd if=dev/zero of=dev/hda count=1 bs=512
However, it is most probably not what you want. If you want to reinstall a windows mbr, start with a windows bootdisk and type:

Code: Select all

fdisk /mbr
As posted above.

Whatever you do, do not run the dd command if you don't understand what it does.

And if you don't have it handy you can always get one from here: http://bootdisk.com/
As a bonus, they even have non-MS DOS (DRDOS) bootdisks.
