Flash fullscreen woes

Post by Ken69267 » Wed Jun 09, 2010 5:22 pm

Okay, I have been having the most frustrating troubles with fullscreen flash lately. I'm using chromium 5.0.375.70 and flash 10.0.45.2. I use KDE if that matters and have an intel X3100 video card. ~amd64.

Anyway, when I fullscreen flash, the most extreme annoyance is sometimes the picture will freeze. Sound will keep playing, I can move my mouse, I can still type into the different programs I had open like irssi, but X is frozen to whatever flash was displaying. The only way to fix it is to nuke X usually with sysrq-k. Nothing else seems to work.

The second annoyance is sometimes the fullscreen flash video will loose focus and essentially vaporizes from existence except its still playing sound and the process is running. I cannot find that window at all however, with alt tab, the show all windows kde thing, etc. Quite annoying as I usually have to close the tab and start over.

Anyone have any ideas about fixing these issues or why they are happening?

Best I can tell you at this point is to strace the plugin thread and see if its throwing an inordinate amount of errors. Put it into a file and use this sed script to drop the normal network transaction garbage:

Code: Select all

sed '/EAGAIN/d;/^\s*$/d;/writev/d;/poll/d;/read(18/d;/ITIMER_VIRTUAL/d;/SIGVTALRM/d;/futex/d'
Its unlikely that you'll find anything though because Flash just renders terribly at large sizes. I'm betting its just flash not doing very well.

additionally you may want to try running chromium through gdb. while diagnosing flash issues in the past, ive been surprised to realize the fault lied with other components.

Yeah there they write to continue discussion in the flash forums. And the 64bit flash linux forum is now "read only". What a strategy to not have to answer to anyone!
