unmerged comm_err, now can't use portage - help!

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

I stupidly unmerged comm_err and ss (long story, don't ask). Now I can't seem to do anything with portage, and fear more problems besides. Of course, I also can't re-emerge them:

Code: Select all

nkeiser@wykydtron ~ $ sudo emerge com_err
sudo: error while loading shared libraries: libcom_err.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
A guide on how to replace these manually and then allow for a proper re-emerge thereafter would be appreciated, but so would better ideas.

su
(root password)
emerge e2fsprogs-libs
OR
emerge ss com_err (for stable)

Worked wonderfully, so thank you very much for squashing a nightmarish situation quickly. :) Although I'm thoroughly perplexed as to how I couldn't emerge anything via my normal user and sudo but could as root if the libs removed were gone. In short: how did this still work?

sudo uses com_err.

su does not.

To make things more interesting, unmerging com_err will stop wget from working, meaning you can't get anything through the default portage.

The workaround is to download the e2fsprogs-libs file manually with your browser, and drop them in the distfiles folder, and emerge e2fsprogs. It shall build the libs, saving your gentoo life.

too late after you unmerged them, which is the problem of the topic author.

Rumors say that there are people out there doing rm -rf ${DISTDIR}/* quite often, not using some useful tool like eclean for managing stuff in ${DISTDIR}...
The manual said "Requires Windows10 or better" so I installed GNU/Linux...

my portage overlay

Need a stage1 tarball? (Unofficial builds)
