I've emerged the nvidia-kernal and nvidia-glx packages.

I've set up xf86config (correctly as far as I know, but it's my first times so be gentle)

startx crashes with the following error:

Code:
(EE)NVIDIA(0): Failed to Allocate LUT context DMA
(EE)NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

Fatal Server Error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

Any ideas?

added MTRRs support to kernel. Now NVDriver fails to load.

Even reverting to previous working kernel, or unmerging nvidia kerel and glx and starting again doesn't fix it.

the NVdriver is present in the /lib/modules/2.4.29-gentoo/kernel/video/ directory

insmod NVDriver reports unresolved symbols: mtrr_del_Rsmp_272d39e and mtrr_add_Rsmp_56179c5f.

any ideas?

thanks

I'm back where I started

kernel no longer has MTRR support as the 2880 driver will not run with it.

kernel no longer has DRI enabled.

remerged nvidia-kernel and glx

Back to the errors detailed in the original message

ASUS geforce 3 Deluxe (original not Ti)

I've been stuck at this point for about 6 hours. I've exhausted google.

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-2880/README.txt

Q: X fails with error "Failed to allocate LUT context DMA"

A: This is one of the possible consequences of compiling NVdriver with
a different gcc version than used to compile the Linux kernel
(see above).

Ok, nice info, but I"m compiling the kernel and the NVdriver on the same system, one after the other....

make blah blah for the kernel
reboot
emerge nvidia-kernel/glx

surely this compiles both with the same gcc version?

:?

UPDATE: cat /proc/version and gcc -v both return gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release).

This indicates that both the kernel and NVdriver are compiled with the same version of gcc.

A reply I received on the nvidia forums suggests that the gentoo emerge may be faulty...

I haven't tested the theory yet, but someone on the nvidia forums suggested downloading the source tars myself and recompiling them from scratch. They indicated this would solve the problem.

To me this says the emerge process may be faulty. I'm not exactly sure what emerging does. I thought it downloaded and compiled the package. But if downloading and compiling myself will fix the problem, there must be a problem with this automated process (in the case of the nvidia driver).

Anything else that may be causing this behaviour? I've got a minimal gentoo install, and have recompiled my kernel several times. Could this lead to anything that could be causing me woes? I heard talk of kernel symlinks and the like, but I don't really know what that is. I'm learning all about linux as install gentoo. ;)

Any theories, ideas, etc?

:)

I can say I rely on the NVidia drivers for my Geforce 2MX 400 card and I haven't had any problems. I installed about 4 days ago (approximate).

odd...

The only thing emerging really does is follow a recipe in a ebuild package on where to get the files from and if I'm not mistaken, dependencies.

I downloaded the tars and manually compiled, for the same results.

I uninstalled X, Reinstalled X

XFree86 -congure

reset back to standard nv driver. X boots (now I'm stuck on USB mouse, very annoying... but that another thread :) )

Will look at the NVdriver in a future release maybe, or when I have X up and running.

Very frustrating.
