hi i just brought a new machine
Intel core 2 quad
could anyone reccomend any ood use flags for my make.conf

When you have gcc-4.2 already, I would first try to change CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
If not, update your entire system profile first with emerge --update --deep --newuse system, then change the CFLAGS and do
emerge --emptytree system twice and then emerge --emptytree world.
On my Core (1) Duo, the native speeds up programs more than using the prescott march.

USE Flags is a good question. This mainly depends on your work behavior. A good starting point for such a processor would be the USE flags mmx, sse, sse2, sse3. Have a look at your /proc/cpuinfo first, if sse3 is fully supported, but I think so.

Then you have to choose. When you are a hardcore gnome fan, you should set -kde -qt, as hardcore kde fan -gtk -gnome.
I also set -arts as kde fan and -pam because it produces some trouble.
When you want to get bleeding edge, maybe the debug USE flag is also good for you. But beware, nano produces weird output with this flag. So disable it for this package in the package.uses
When you want to program, the doc use flag is a nice extra.

Most use flags are only package dependant, so it's best to look what you want to do.

Im a bit confused on which installation disk i should be using and if i should go 32 or 64 bit ?
Any recommendations at all

As install disk use i686 or the amd64 live cd.
When you want a 32 bit system, i686 is your choice.
When you want a 64 bit system, amd64 will give you all you need

I have an amd64 bit and all i get is trouble on my other machine

The same as with the use flags.
It depends on what you want to do with your system.

64 bit is a clean and good system and has more abilities than an 32 bit system, mainly the large possible ram.
But some applications are only working in 32 bit mode, mainly the original netscape flash module.

So you need to choose. I think, for most users 32 bit is equal or better than 64 bit.

I don't know if I get you likewhoa, but you can also do a normal install with the live cd.
If doing this all the time.
The problem is, when you try to use the original gentoo cd, there is no other real chance anymore for i686 or x64 systems anymore.

gentoo_newguy, you can also use any live cd from any other linux system you have already.
It works the same as with the gentoo live cd.

just use the onces provide by gentoo. you maybe add sse3 sse2 if you like.

Your USE flags can also be set easily using a different profile. For instance, if you are going to primarily use the computer for a desktop setup (not server or workstation), you can set your profile to be "desktop" instead of the default. If you need help doing this, please just ask.

Im just finishing of my install now.

I have made a seprate partition for portage "/usr/portage"
I was wondering does this need to be added to fstab
I have allways used the 3 standard partitions.

Also having a bit of trouble after boot up.

likewhoa, your custom installcd. What kernel ver. are you using? and could you tell me, or point me in the direction of how to make your own installcd. Right now I am having to use saybon (latest) just to boot on my computer. (intel motherboard) that has a funky way of doing the cdrom drive (/dev/sr0) and the 2007.1 installcd want do it. Not to mention I have a highpoint rocketraid 2300 controller card that is not in the 2.6.22-r9 kernel, and may never be put in the kernel. highpoint has linux (open source) drivers for it though. I also have to download the intel e1000 latest driver from intels website for my network card to work right. I was thinking if your custom installcd took care of my cdrom drive issue (2.6.21 or better kernel) then that would be GREAT. (one step closer) and if i could make my own installcd I could compile my other modules that i have to have and include them in my installcd.

P.s I have been able to get my system up and running, I messed it up last night be trying to patch the kernel to put in my rocketraid into the kernel other than having it load as a module from module_load (genkernel)

i created my livecd using catalyst you can find that at http://gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/catalyst
my livecd should work for you and most people with recent hardware, the current release is missing some sshd libs so you won't be able to ssh to the livecd environment until i upload the revision that fixes that, otherwise it should be able to detect most your hardware as it's running 2.6.23-kamikaze and gentoo-sources-2.6.23.

Normally, for you should be the following entries enough:

If you install your kernel with make install, then your grub.conf should look like

sda3 if your first partition is /boot, your second swap and your third root. Else point to the device given in fstab as /

Further, keep in mind that the correct march in CFLAGS does already set certain instruction sets, so you don't need to set them once more:

This is superfluous since those flags are implied by "march=prescott/nocona".

It would make more sense to set the smp use-flag, although AFAIK this is used only by a single package, the Gimp. (But you definitely should build your kernel with smp enabled!)
