I get an error when I try to add xeffects with layman.

layman -a xeffects
* Running command "/usr/bin/svn co "svn://svn.gentoo-xeffects.org/xeffects/trunk/" "/usr/portage/local/layman/xeffects""...
svn: Unknown hostname 'svn.gentoo-xeffects.org'
* Failed to add overlay "xeffects".
* Error was: Adding the overlay failed!

Also, none of the xeffects sites (forum or wiki) appear to work.
Any ideas?

Dear hpstg,

same here - seems that the address svn://svn.gentoo-xeffects.org/xeffects/trunk/ (http://svn.gentoo-xeffects.org/xeffects/trunk) is not available?

a layman -L shows:
* xeffects [Subversion] (source: svn://svn.gentoo-xeffects....)
* xeffects-experimental [Subversion] (source: svn://svn.gentoo-xeffects....)
layman -a xeffects results in:
* Running command "/usr/bin/svn co "svn://svn.gentoo-xeffects.org/xeffects/trunk/" "/usr/portage/local/layman/xeffects""...
svn: Unknown hostname 'svn.gentoo-xeffects.org'
* Failed to add overlay "xeffects".
* Error was: Adding the overlay failed!

Here further informations about:
layman -a xeffects doesn't work / question about git: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-54 ... fects.html
Greetings from Vienna

Thank you for answering. Anyone knows what has happened? I just compiled a gnome-light, gcc 4.2 (hashstyles and all) amd64 system, and I'm dying to see it run compiz-fusion. :-P

http://gentoo-xeffects.org/ dosen't seem to be resolving (DNS) right now... and

Code: Select all

user host ~ $ layman -s xeffects
* Running command "/usr/bin/svn update "/usr/portage/local/layman/xeffects""...
svn: Can't connect to host 'svn.gentoo-xeffects.org': Connection refused
*
* Errors:
* ------
*
* Failed to sync overlay "xeffects".
* Error was: Syncing overlay "xeffects" returned status 256!
*
something must be happening with the host.

Hi, anybody experienced gnome / gtk apps menus getting a delay of 1.5 to 2 sec before showing?

This is happening on my computer with a dual screen config. The problem is only on the primary screen.
I've ruled out plugins causing this, tryed disabling them all.
Also played with gconf and the fade options there, but no effect.

I'm not using twinview but configured as two devices. Its a nvidia card.

Use layman -a -k xeffects (either -k or -K, not sure, don't use gentoo anymore)

This is in the output from my layman:

* xeffects [Subversion] (source: svn://svn.gentoo-xeffects....)

Perhaps you should check your settings in layman.cfg. You need

Code: Select all

nocheck  : yes
Otherwise it won't work.

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone cares to make a forecast on when we'll see compiz-fusion moving into portage. I see there are no requests yet on b.g.o and I imagine there must still be some work to do on stabilizing, esp. the ex-beryl plugins and I guess also cairo will need updating before anything else can go in. Is there an (even informal) roadmap towards this goal?

They haven't released any source tarballs yet, so until they at least release a pre-release, it won't appear in portage. Even then, someone would have to submit all the ebuilds to buzilla and someone would have to step forward as a maintainer.

We are a while out yet I think :P

Talk about timing...

It's a release candidate...

Looks like I have some fun work ahead.... I'll see about working on 0.5.2 ebuilds. No promises... :)

Has anyone had any problems with other apps and the 'xcb' use flag? As you know, it is now required for future compiz builds.

I rebuilt libX11, mesa, cairo and xorg-server after adding 'xcb' to my use flags. Unfortunately, it broke nabi, which is used for Korean text input. It also broke scim/skim, which use the same input methods as nabi.

Is there any easy way to modify the ebuilds to use snapshots from before xcb was included?

[edit:] Found a post on the xeffects forum with a patch to drop xcb from compiz.

I just saw compiz 0.5.2 appear in portage. Does this mean we will have compiz-fusion in the official tree in a short while?

I carefully read ALL the instructions and fixes in this thread only to have it run like a lead balloon. Talk about slow, it used so much of the resources the machine (AMD-64 939, 2G RAM) almost stopped for any multitasking.

I have returned to Beryl or the time being, I'll check back in a couple months when Compiz-Fusion should be a little smoother and easier to install and get running.
If I keep putting my foot in my own mouth ..... :oops:

Anyway, did what I should have done in the first place, completely wiped beryl, then reinstalled the system and world

Code: Select all

# emerge -C beryl beryl-core beryl-manager beryl-settings beryl-settings-bindings beryl-dbus beryl-plugins
# emerge --sync
# emerge -e system && emerge -e system && emerge -e world
# emerge revdep-rebuild
then reinstalled 'compiz-fusion' from 'xeffects'

All is well with the 'world' now. :D

I haven't read through the entire thread, but is it possible to install compiz-fusion 0.5.2 without gconf?
The gnome use-flag is unselected, but it still drags in gconf.

I saw something on the C-F forums about that. You can just comment out the gconf requirement in the ebuild then re-digest it. That's probably the easiest way atm until the ebuild is updated.

Well except x11-wm/compiz-9999 everything compiled fine. I used the version 0.5.2 instead.
But it isn't working here anyway with intel graphics X3100 (965GM).

hi, i get the following error compiling x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-main-9999

Code: Select all

checking for COMPIZ... yes
checking for BCOP... configure: error: Package requirements (bcop >= 0.5.2) were not met:

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables BCOP_CFLAGS
and BCOP_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

I didn't noticed the "bcop --version" line, have you kept the order from gentoo-wiki.com?
