Bootsplash features (Mngs, progress bar, and silent mode)

  • Quote

Post by sp1nm0nkey » Mon Jul 14, 2003 2:07 am

Ok, so there has been much talk about the v3 bootsplash features, so here is a dedicated thread.

So, my question is what is involved in getting Silent Mode working? I have the line on the kernel config, I have patched the system with http://www.aichler.net/gentoo/bootsplash/. What could be preventing silent mode from working?

P.S. Verbose works like a charm

Do you have to pass the splash=silent option to ther kernel in from either grub of lilo wichever you use.

Silent mode didn't work for me using gentoo-sources. I switched to gs-sources (for a different reason) and, lo and behold, when I rebooted, the silent screen came up!

I don't know what did it. The relevent part of .config is almost indentical (one had an extra parameter but it was not set).
After Perl everything else is just assembly language.

Yesterday I tried to install the patch for the progressbar (at http://www.aichler.net/gentoo/bootsplash/).
The progressbar is working, but on bootup the animations are not being played (also no "press F2" message appears)...
On shutdown all seems fine: animation is played + "press F2" message appeared.

So the silent mode is basically working (including progress bar), but no animations...

Tonight I'll play some more to see what is wrong...

If you are using the gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r5 that might be the problem. In this version the framebuffer size is not set correctly due to an other patch trying to deal with an other problem. Take a look at page 2 in

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=47612

I had the problem described there and used the posted patch and now have a fully working bootsplash. That is silent mode with progress bar and animations.

Okey, so does this patch and method http://www.aichler.net/gentoo/bootsplas ... ments.html work for the 2.4.20-rc5 gentoo kernel source? Seen a lot of complaints at the forum that it doesn't, but maybe it's fixed now? Don't wan't to start a whole new thread just to ask that, so please reply. Thnx in advance.

As far as I know the bootsplash package doesn't do it all for the gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r5. (at least not when I used it.

What I did was to follow the instructions at the url you just mentioned, but I got error due to the bug I mentioned previously:

Code: Select all

kernel: Looking for splash picture.... silenjpeg size 20209 bytes, does not fit into framebuffer.
The framebuffer size wasn't correctly set so the silent jpeg didn't fit, and thus silent mode was broken. To fix this I used the patch posted on page two in

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=47612

It givs you an extra option to set in your kernel config. When the VESA framebuffer is enabled it is possible to set a multiplier so you can control the framebuffer size. I've set mine to 8.

After this silent mode works perfectly on my system

I haven't tried any more; I had no time.

I think I'll give it another shot this weekend.
Does anyone else have similar problems?

Same thing. On startup only though. During shutdown I do get the text.

I wish that I could just follow the instructions, but I'm stuck at the getting the requirements.

On the requirements page (http://www.aichler.net/gentoo/bootsplas ... ments.html), it says that I need epm and fbmngplay. EPM emerged fine but when I tried to compile fbmngplay, I got this:

Code: Select all

lostech fbmngplay # make
gcc -02 -Wall -c -o fbmngplay.o fbmngplay.c
gcc -02 -Wall -c -o messages.o messages.c
gcc -02 -Wall -c -o mng.o mng.c
gcc -02 -Wall -c -o console.o console.c
gcc -02 -Wall -L/usr/lib -o fbmngplay -L/usr/lib fbmngplay.o messages.o mng.o console.o -lmng -lz -lm
gcc -02 -Wall -L/usr/lib -static -o fbmngplay.static -L/usr/lib fbmngplay.o messages.o mng.o console.o /usr/lib/libmng-mini.a /usr/lib/libz.a -lm
gcc: /usr/lib/libmng-mini.a: No such file or directory
make: *** [fbmngplay.static] Error 1
Where is libmng-mini.a? Am I maybe missing a use flag so it wasn't created at some earlier time?

Do I really need to compile fbmngplay?

fbmngplay is needed, if you want to have animations and do you need the static version of fbmngplay only, if you have /usr on an extra partition.

From the LFS bootsplash hint:
Compiling a static fbmngplay
----------------------------

If you keep /usr on a different partition to /, then you will need to use the
static version of fbmngplay. This is so it does not depend on any libraries that
are on a partition that may not have yet been mounted. To rid yourself of the
compile error, edit the line in Makefile

LIBSS = $(LIBDIR)/libmng-mini.a $(LIBDIR)/libz.a -lm

To

LIBSS = $(LIBDIR)/libmng.a $(LIBDIR)/libjpeg.a $(LIBDIR)/libz.a -lm

Then copy fbmngplay.static to /sbin/fbmngplay

My /usr is not on a separate partition. However, in downloading the bootsplash-patch files and looking at the README file, I noticed that it said to expect and ignore errors regarding the linking of fbmngplay.static. (This note wasn't on the site). I will try out the non-static (?) version first and see what happens.

EDIT: Whoo! It works! Ignoring the errors and proceeding with the rest of the instructions worked! Just a suggestion, micha, but perhaps it might be a good idea to update the requirements page on your website with the requirements document that is included in your archives so that n00bs like me won't freak out when they see the error.

Have you got the animations working now? Cuz I seem to have the same problem, The bootsplash image works fine, but there are no animations and no text ("Press F2.."). And during shutdown, nothing seem to appear not even the bootsplash image :/

hay, i got all this stuff working, animations, themes and all.. but..

the only two animations that shows during bootup is the hdd blinking and a world spinning.
i really don't know what's the trigger for these animations, but there should be a net and keyboard animation aswell.

i uncommented some stuff in the /etc/bootsplash/gentoo/config/animations.cfg and the keyboard appeared, but didn't do the animation.

anyone got all animations working? how to trigger them for _my_ system?

Hi all,

Did someone manage to display animations with mm-sources ?

I use 2.6.1-mm2 with bootsplash (silent & verbose)
i can launch the animations with fbmngplay without any pb

I patched baselayout (1.8.6.12-r3) with bootsplash-patch

but no animation starts during the boot.

My animations.cfg is very basic
i use gentoo theme (version 3) and i added the animation directory in /etc/bootsplash/gentoo/

Ok,

I managed to launch animations at bootup but there is a bug with fbmngplay :
you can launch only 2 animations as mikkoloo said.
