[SOLVED] Could not open System.map

  • Quote

Post by Gentoo-Ed » Fri Feb 09, 2007 8:26 pm

Hello. When booting I get this (after adding two autoload modules)

Code: Select all

*Updating modules.dep
FATAL: Could not open '/System.map': No such file or directory
*Using /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 as config:
What I tried is then copy the /usr/src/linux/System.map to /boot/System.map which didn't help. What am I missing here?

in /boot you should have System.map-yourkernelversion and System.map should be a symlink to it.

same with config ......... and vmlinuz(if you use it)

System.map -> System.map.2.6.20-gentoo
System.map-2.6.19-gentoo-r5
System.map-2.6.20-gentoo
System.map.old -> System.map-2.6.19-gentoo-r5
config -> config-2.6.20-gentoo
config-2.6.19-gentoo-r5
config-2.6.20-gentoo
config.old -> config-2.6.19-gentoo-r5
fbsplash-livecd-2006.1-1024x768
vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.6.20-gentoo
vmlinuz-2.6.19-gentoo-r5
vmlinuz-2.6.20-gentoo
vmlinuz.old -> vmlinuz-2.6.19-gentoo-r5

It is recommended to manually run modules-update after adding modules to the autoload file.

But, you will also get this error after installing a new kernel.
It will look for it in /boot, /usr/src/linux, then /. Only / is mounted when the script is run. If /boot and /usr are on separate partitions it won't be able to find it. I would copy System map to / when installing a new kernel.

mmm maybe I'm getting old and forgetting things.

I rember indeed when I once installed with stage 1 that I needed to do some things with system.map and others. Now I again followed the handbook (manual kernel config) but I can't find those steps any more.

Any one can tell me them? As soon as my emerge is done I can then pick up this thread again.

heh
I don't use the new handbook either, I always use the 2005.0 :)
I printed the whole thing back then and put it all in a huge binder, and printed every how-to i used for the past 2 years. , I have one heck of a gentoo book all organized with colored tabs. Damn what a nerd I can be.
I'll never let my 2005 CD's go......

Seems like the correct fix in Gentoo is:

# env-update && source /etc/profile
# modules-update
# reboot

..and not to copy System.map anywhere.

I commited a bug (now marked fixed) on bugzilla.
this bug should now (once it's gone live) only happen if both /usr and /boot are separate partitions than /
Moved to using Arch Linux

HOLY COW I'M TOTALLY GOING SO FAST OH F*** ;)
