*i have a problem reading wmv9 videos
here is an example of videos in wmv format that is readable under windows media player but not under vlc 0.8.6
http://tuttifrutti.video.free.fr/

here's my use flags:
Code:
# emerge -av vlc

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/vlc-0.8.6  USE="X a52 alsa cdda cddb dts dvb dvd flac hal httpd libnotify matroska mp3 mpeg ncurses nsplugin ogg opengl oss png rtsp samba sdl speex svg theora truetype vorbis wxwindows xml xv -3dfx -aalib (-altivec) -arts -avahi -bidi -corba -daap -debug -directfb -esd -fbcon -ggi -gnutls -libcaca -lirc -live -mod -optimisememory -seamonkey -shout -skins -stream -svga -upnp -v4l -vcd -vlm -win32codecs -xinerama -xosd" 0 kB

Code:
$ vlc DADVSI_le_film.wmv
VLC media player 0.8.6 Janus
[00000259] access_file access error: seeking too far
[00000297] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000246] main playlist: stopping playback

*is there any wmv9 videos on the web

*by the way how do i controlvlc with the web interface?

The other improvements on vlc kick ass tho ;)

would like to find out what the problem is ... i get the audio just fine
but no video from the wmv's i've tried.

[00000450] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

tho i've tried them videos from http://www.grc.com/sr/themovie.htm
and those should be wmv9

Try the lastest ffmpeg ebuild : ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20061016 .
It works very well with mplayer (amd64). :D

Yes the ability to play the WMV9 files comes from the latest ffmpeg. So upgrade your ffmpeg then emerge the new VLC.

Didn't work for me. I seem to suffer from:
http://lists.pld-linux.org/mailman/pipermail/pld-bugs/2007-April/008059.html
Also described in
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=37684&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&view=print
Seems to be ugly.. I guess I'll have to wait for the next VLC / ffmpeg version :-/
Any ideas?
