Cannot emerge kde-i18n

hello,

I'm trying to install kde-i18n in konsole with root permission, but get error message in return. Unfortunalely, there's no clue I could find to solve the problem. Here's the error message

As shown above, it says "no error message" which confuses me. Anyone knows the problem?

You need to pick one (or more) of the languages you want to have support for, and add the line LINGUAS="" to /etc/make.conf. Then you will be able to install it.

Any way to not pick a language? I like the defaut English and do not want to install any overhead...

Yes, just don't emerge kde-i18n and you will have only English.

What is pulling this in? Today it wants to emerge it for the first time, and I haven't changed anything.

The nls USE flag was added to kde-meta temporarily which caused a dependency on kde-i18n if set. 27 minutes later, that change was reverted pending discussion. So if you sync again, it should dissapear, otherwise just `echo "=kde-base/kde-meta-3.5.5 -nls" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords`.

Question on this subject. I got this error too and I have mine set to what used to be english only like this:

Now it seems something was changed. This was working before at least. The only options that I have according to the error is this:

en_GB

I found this list, http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/ge ... c?rev=1.15 and according to it I have it set to a valid option. Why am I getting this error? I only use english here. Am I overlooking something or is this a bug and it should be seeing it as a vaild option, which I think it is anyway?

Well, nothing changed here. Still have the same error. I still can understand why it doesn't see that I have a valid language flag set yet.

Man, I have the same problem now. Did an sync and update world. It trying to bring in kde-base/kde-i18n-3.5.5.

I put LINGUAS="en" in /etc/make.conf, but that does not work.

I don't want kde-i18n. How do you get around this? Update world bring's it in.

I still have this problem on two boxes, one amd64 and one x86. I tried using package.use to remove nls from kde-meta, and I tried adding -nls to my make.conf. Any way to stop this?

Well, I added -nls to my make.conf USE line and am in the process of doing a emerge -Nv world right now. It will take about 4 hours for this to complete. Maybe then it will not pull in this package but I suspect that it will.

I found that and it appears that kde-meta pulls in ALL KDE packages whether you need them or not. I think this should fall under the 'if needed' instead of 'must have'. Not everyone speaks a language other than english and this is causing problems for those who only speak english.

Will report back later.

Don't forget to re-emerge kde-meta after changing this USE flag. Then the kde-i18n-package shouldn't be pulled in.

P.S. Not only English-speaking people want their kde to be in English. My native language is Dutch, but I like my programs to be in English.

That seemed to have worked. It did require it to re-emerge about 50 packages and took about 5 hours to finish. Gcc and kdelibs was the longest ones though.

So I guess if you can put -nls in make.conf and not mess up something else then you have a fix.

I still feel this should not have happened though. It seemed that it got added to everybody even though a lot of people don't need it and can actually lead to problems. Maybe I am missing something in the reasoning though.

It is fixed now. All I did was add -nls to package.use for kde-meta and re-emerge kde-meta. It took just a couple of minutes, so it seems like the easiest solution.

As far as I understand linguas setting it defined in order language to be picked for applicatons. For example I tried "de bg some_more" and now I have thunderbird in bulgarian and firefox in german. Later is not really expected
