There's a couple of projects trying to build a linux-based (or cross-platform) engine to run the original C&C and RA1 - see http://freecnc.sourceforge.net/ and http://www.freera.org/

They both run fine inder Wine!

I bought "C&C the first decade" for 30 bucks - I think it is good value!

If you have a half-decent 3D graphic card (I have an old NVIDIA GeForce) and you are not easily scared (and don't suffer from nightmares).. Then.. try System Shock 2!
Runs fine under Wine if you disable sound hardware acceleration, and is now freely available (the company which produced it, Looking Glass, went under some time ago).
One of the best and most disturbing games I have ever played..
When I entered the Satanic Temple and was attacked by two cyberassassins from the front a Xerxes robot from behind I almost had a panic attack.. had to stop for a few days (old players will recognize this moment - this is not a spoiler).
Excellent action (especially disabling weapon degradation), and one of the best plots ever.

I hope you don't mind spiders; Just don't tell me I did not warn you.

Do all the C&C games included in that package work under WINE? It does look like a good value, if you can make 'em all work under Linux.

With the good games, you can add X-Plane http://x-plane.com/about.html

The dogs have it!

http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=3924

You will need to follow the installation instructions, and re-create the audio files with a program that comes with the game.
There are only 3 cutscenes in avi format; if the game does not play them you can use mplayer to view Cs1.avi (game intro) and Cs2.avi (something has gone horribly wrong) - then start the game!

Have fun!

According to the wine HQ, all of them should work (generals with some glitches)
I finished both C&C and Red Alert and I can confirm they work; will try Tiberian Sun as soon as I get the DVD back from the friend I borrowed it to :(

I see your point.. The intellectual property of this game is not clear.
However, this is how I see it: play it, and if you like it, you *can* buy from Sold Out software another excellent game from the same programming and design team, to even the score:
DeusEx for 4.99 pounds at http://www.sold-out.co.uk/

[sorry for the rant - too much free time I guess]

Nice proposal :)
So I tried System Shock 2 from underdogs. Unfortunately, the game does not work with wine 0.9.22.
I've looked for info in the winehq appdb: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=1444
Can you confirm the game works with an older version of wine?

Right now I am playing under wine-0.9.25, but I did not have problems with earlier versions..
Which errors do you get? Which graphic card do you have??
Also, remember to start winecfg, select audio, and set hardware acceleration to 'emulation'..

Thanks for your reply.
I have the same behaviour other users report in the appdb page: menus are working, sound is working, when I start a new game screen goes black and wine exits with a page fault error. Sometimes wine just hangs up and I have to kill it manually.
Graphic card is a Geforce6600GT AGP.
I've tried setting the hardware acceleration to 'emulation' under Audio in winecfg as you suggest, same thing :(
Btw, I'm using OSS Driver, the other game I play with wine (Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom) works fine with that.
Do you have any recommendations for other settings in winecfg? I've tried changing windows verison for Shock2.exe to Windows98 or something else, still no luck. Also I changed Vertex Shader Support to emulated but maybe System Shock 2 does not even use vertex shader, right?

I would say is is more than good enough!
Looks like you have some graphic acceleration problems; they should not be impossible to fix..
Which version of wine and nvidia drivers are you using?
I am using x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776, wine-0.9.25 and xorg-server-1.1.1-r1 but that game has been playable for a long time - I would think even older versions should work.

The first thing to check would be if graphic acceleration works:
What do you get if you run glxinfo? Can you send me the output?
If you run glxgears and leave it running for a minute without touching it, how many fps do you get??
(this is to check that the nvidia glx module is actually working correctly)

If glx works for X, another thing to check: did you compile wine with openGL support? You can check it with "equery uses wine".. it should contain a line like this:
+ + opengl : Adds support for OpenGL (3D graphics)

One last thing: can you copy-paste the error messages Wine prints before exiting?
If you get something like "Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".", then we know what the problem is - we just need to enable glx, disable DRI (both in xorg.conf) and make sure you are using the native nvidia implementation (eselect opengl set nvidia) - then restart X.

From your description, it would look like a graphics problem more than anything else - to rule out sound you can try and disable it entirely and see if it makes a difference.
About which version to use, I think both 95 and 98 work -will double-check as soon as I can.
Also, XP may not work, I heard..
Try also changing the video settings (double-buffering, allow window manager etc.) (I understand I am just fishing here!)
PS: The game does not use vertex shaders..

Thanks,

Yes, glx is ok.
Code:

tony@lorien ~/SystemShock2 $ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
...

Yes.
Code:

lorien tony # equery uses wine
...
+ + opengl  : Adds support for OpenGL (3D graphics)
...

The relevant error is (I think):
Code:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000004 at address 0x7e63a752 (thread 0009), starting debugger...

I omitted some "fixme", if you wish I can paste them too.

I tried disabling double-buffering, no changes. I tried running wine as a 640x480 desktop, no changes. I tried running a 16 bit X, instead of my usual 32 bit, no changes. Damn :)
Well, I learned one thing or two about wine following your advices, so thank you!
