I think i broke portage

i was trying to update my portage, complete newbie by the way... and it said my profile was out of date and gave me some instructions, i didnt write them down, thought it would be easy. It told me to emerge something like '>=sys/portage blah blah blah' then cd/etc
rm make.profile
then do ln -s /usr/portage/default-linux something....
problem is, i dont remember the ln -s /usr/portage/default-linux line.
now it says make.profile is not a symlink and im afraid to do anything more incase i break it beyond repair.

ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.1/desktop/ /etc/make.profile

It is archictecture-dependent. It should be one of the directories under:
/usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/
edit: hielvc's example is for x86.
