root partition and udev

hi, suddenly i cannot boot anymore, i think after installing udev and missing something.
after grub i get this error:

Code: Select all

fsck.ext3: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/hda3
but with a livecd i can mount and browse that filesystem and fsck say it is clean, it's like does not exists /dev/hda3.
it happens even with "gentoo=noudev" parameter, i think it should be like using devfs as before.
thanks,
Marco

If your kernel's not even finding your root partition, that's too early for udev to be the problem. The kernel keeps it's own set of names internally, udev runs in userspace to translate them into other names once the system boots.

Is the driver for your hard drive controller compiled into your kernel? It cannot be a module; how would it load the module from your disk?

i'm pretty sure it's a problem about devices naming, but why /dev/hda3 is no more the 3rd partition of the 1st ide disc, what's its name now?
it seems it does'nt run devfsd nor udevd...
