You can thank us all by not typing in all caps and spelling out your words. You have been here long enough to not be a noob like that... I think....

Does revdep-rebuild -p return anything ? Also have you emerged any toolchain based stuff recently (binutils, gcc etc) ?

Edit - Also does (backing up first) going with a fresh KDE (backup/remove .kde) have any effect ?

revdep-rebuild -p returns:

bash: revdep-rebuild: command not found

and no i havent emerged anything like that lately?

and i am unsure on how do to a fresh install of kde? I previously did an emerge kde-meta do install kde. i del my /root/.kde folder and did an "emerge kde-meta" and that looks like it did nothing?

thanks for your help

altough I'm not as senstive as keevn, he definitely has a point with your general attitude. The subject is clearly inappropriate, because if you have a problem with your filesystem or even KDE, this doesn't mean that Konqueror suxs. Constructive critism is a very good thing, but I believe that simply saying that Konqueror sux falls somewhere else. Please some netiquetes.

Now your problem:
I think revdep-rebuild is part of gentoolkit, so emerge gentoolkit first

Are you able to rename the files via command line with the same user that logs into KDE? (non root)

Which KDE are you running? Meta distribution? I'm not sure what this has to do, just trying to see what's in front of you and get some ideas.

In any case, please try that. If you start KDE with via startx, maybe post the console output. If everything else fails, try compiling with debug support. But I have a feeling that it is something with your filesystem. What is your filesystem?

You're running KDE as root ?

There's no need to remerge KDE to get back to a clean state, backing up and then removing the .kde stuff in your home folder, will do that. After that it's a case of experimenting to see what's causing the prob.

KDE 3.5 is fine over here, I would feel inclined to get what you've got going first, save the upgrade as a last resort - then again it's due out on ~x86 shortly (I think). Have you tried the advice so far in the thread ?

I apoligize about the title, it wont happen again!

ok heres what i get with

revdep-rebuild -p

Configuring search environment for revdep-rebuild

Checking reverse dependencies...

Packages containing binaries and libraries broken by a package update
will be emerged.

Collecting system binaries and libraries... done.
(/root/.revdep-rebuild.1_files)

Collecting complete LD_LIBRARY_PATH... done.
(/root/.revdep-rebuild.2_ldpath)

Checking dynamic linking consistency...
done.
(/root/.revdep-rebuild.3_rebuild)

Assigning files to ebuilds... Nothing to rebuild

Evaluating package order... done.
(/root/.revdep-rebuild.5_order)

Dynamic linking on your system is consistent... All done.

umm and doing it with a reguar user isnt working eithier?
im willing to go back and do this whole install over?
would doing a stage1 install help? and get the latest gcc?
any other ideas?

If removing your .kde files hasn't helped (you say you've reemerged KDE already ?) and unless anybody else can see any likely culprit that needs reemerging/changing the only other thing I can suggest is a system rebuild - two emerge systems, followed by two emerge worlds.

paulb787, please go down three gears! :D
This is not Windows. If you think that solving a crash problem means goin to stage 1 install, then please stop drinking so much coffee!!
Some people, including myself, have suggested some things to check or have asked you questions which you haven't answered yet. Please try those, or if you don't fell like listening, just go ahead and reformat using resier4, do a stage 1 with Gcc 4.1beta with at least 60 optimization flags, KDE 3.51, etc, and the latest nitro kernel...

I have the same problem. The exact description of the problem I have is listed as a bug at:

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54162

but there is no resolution! It appears the problem only occurs when you terminate the rename operation by clicking the blank space in the file browser window, NOT when you press enter or click on any other object to complete the rename.
