The topic pretty much says it but, I was trying to reinstall gentoo after having a horrible accident, and all was going fine until I did an "emerge system" and it gave me that "GNU M4 required" message. I tried redoing everything about three times, and still no luck.

I am running red hat right now, but I am really missing gentoo. If anyone knows any info on how to fix this, please let me know.

Just emerge M4 before doing the "emerge system"....I cant remeber the precise name for it (And Im not on my Gentoo machine right now), But try this:

Code:
emerge -s M4

-and see what it is called. (Remember that we are case-sensitive so its perhaps "m4")

the same happened to me yesterday trying to install gentoo 1.4rc4.
problem is, I think, a wrong dependency tree being used by portage.
I solved the whole thing emerging m4 by hand (emerge m4) and the restarting emerge system.

bye

Nope, this even happens with the default USE flags. I tried it on a friend's machine yesterday and got the same result.
